Four lone heroes wake up dazed, battered and weary. Fresh crimson drips from their shallow cuts, while the deeper wounds ooze with a filthy green pus and are colored black.
The Knight is the first to stand, followed by The Monk, followed by The Assassin, and the last to stand is The Mage.
Each look before them to find a room of solid bricked stone, the squint in the darkness and each see a door marked with their respective symbols.
[[Compelled, they each walk into their door.->The Knight's Trial 1]]The Knight looks up to see an empty cave. His armor cracked and his wounds still pouring, he limps forward to find a fork in the cave, all the while a the smell of mildew and gore fill the air.
A single wooden sign is hastily propped up against the middle of the fork.
On it says:
Left is the path of hardship.
Right is the path of comfort.
Will you go left or right?
[[The Path of Comfort]]
[[The Path of Hardship]]The knight limps down the cavern stretch. The darkness begins to encroach on his sanity, as the spirits of fallen comrades and enemies begin to whisper to him from the shadows.
Eventually he approaches a dull red light that suddenly erupts into a much brighter flame before dying to a small red light. A thunderous impact echoes through the tunnel walls.
The Knight looks at his heavy armor and various weapons.
Will you ditch the armor?
[[yes->The Path of Hardship 'yes']]
[[no->The Path of Hardship 'no']]The Knight limps down the cavern stretch. A faint blue light flickers at the end of it. As he reaches the lip of the tunnel, it opens into a wider cavern with a bright shimmering blue pond. The water glows blue against the darkness
Will you enter the water?
[[yes->The Path of Comfort 'yes']]
[[no->The Path of Comfort 'no']]Will you turn back?
[[yes->The Knight's Trial 1]]
[[no->The Path of Comfort]](set: $knight to false)The Knight slowly enters the water, armor and all, fearing any unknown danger that might be in the water.
As he enters, the water seeps into the openings in the metal and fills the knight with a warm comforting energy. He slowly feels his strength restored to him.
He quickly stands up, filled with vigor!
In that same instand the floor under the pond give way and he flails to catch himself. After a moment he begins to hold his positon above water, but not a second later he feels something brush his feet.
He quickly begins to swim out of the pond, and as he is about to reach the edge, darkness and teeth envelop his vision as something has swallowed him whole.
A gravely voice echoes, "death is true comfort."
[[FAIL->The Monk's Trial]](set: $knight to false)The Knight feels it is too much of a risk to go without his gear, so he limps forward. trying to hurry his gait.
As he finally reaches the opening of the tunnel, he is greeted by a sudden mass of flame coming toward his.
He is too slow to bring up his shield or leap away.
The brave knight is burned to a crisp.
[[FAIL->The Monk's Trial]]
The knight sheds his armor, and his excess weaponry, stripping to only his gambeson, longsword and shield.
He hurriedly picks up the pace and reaches the mouth of the cavern.
He is confronted with the head of an enormous red dragon. A couple of injured lay unconscious on one end of the cavern, but the dragon looks like it could die in one strike.
The dragon breathes in deeply...
Will you...

(set: $knight to false)The knight feels a bead of sweat roll down his brow and gulps. Slowly his feet take him back, as he limps down back down the cavern stretch.
The shadows of soldiers and innocents call to him once more, as the knight feels the strength drain his body.
He collapses in the middle of the tunnel and the shadows slowly consume his body.
A gravely voice echoes in his head, "coward."
[[FAIL->The Monk's Trial]](set: $knight to true)The knight quickly throws away his sword and digs his massive shield into the ground, in front of the unconscious.
The dragon unleashes a torrent of fire and envelops the knight.
[[PASS->The Monk's Trial]](set: $knight to false)The knight looks at the innocents, throws aside his shield and charges the dragon. The dragon fires its breath, but the knight deftly leaps at an angle and dodges the stream of fire.
The smell of burnt bodies fills the room as the unconscious wake up to the pain of dragon fire.
The knight winces, and makes a single, swift strike. Hot dragon blood spurts from the dragons neck as its head is almost severed from its body.
The knight dragon blood burns against the knight's skin.
Slowly, the whispers of lost sould once again fills the room. And shadows suddenly appear at the knights feet. Hands slowly reach out and pull him into darkness as a gravely voice echoes in his head, "how cruel you are knight, letting those innocent burn. Sink in your sin."
[[FAIL->The Monk's Trial]]The Monk wakes up to find a valley of rolling green hills and an empty blue sky. The door behind him has dissapeared completely.
He looks to the east and see's an enormous tree and to the west he sees a palace made of solid gold.
Will you head east or west?
[[east -> The Monk's Trial East]]
[[west -> The Monk's Trial West]]The monk slowly walks towards the tree. He reaches to top of it's hill and sees an enormous tree that grows to the clouds and beyond.
It sturdy mahogany seems to pierce even the sky itself.
A single dead beetle resides at the foot of the tree and a small bunch of smaller of beetles seem to be clustering around it.
A single inscription is engraved onto the tree's trunk:
'What is the first step toward enlightenment?'
Will you...

However, he walks, seemingly without end.
Minutes turn to hours and hours to days. By the fifth day the palace is no closer and the monk begins to realize his legs are moving on their own, regardless of the exhaustion.
He walks and walks, until his legs give out, and his wounds seep crimson into the soft green grass.
A single gravely voice echoes in the monk's head.
"Foolish monk, your greed got the better of you."
[[FAIL->The Mage's Trial]](set: $monk to false)The monk slowly sits down and begins to meditate, a branch tumbles out of the canopy, but the monk does his best to simply meditate on why he is here and what he is doing.
Minutes pass. Minutes turn into hours and hours into days. On the fifth day the monk realizes the he cannot move, speak or open his eyes.
A gravely voice echoes in his head.
"Sit there and think about what you should do for all eternity, as opportunity for action passes you by."
[[FAIL->The Mage's Trial]](set: $monk to false)The monk touches the beetle's corpse, and he feels the energy of his being circulating through his body. He slowly transfers that energy to the beetle.
Cold begins begins to take his body and he finishes and collapses to the ground.
Through bleary eyes, he sees the beetle twitch and rise once more. It goes to be greeted by its children, and a sudden crack echoes from the tree.
A branch tumbles out of the canopy and lands directly on top of the beetles.
The monk feels his life slip away.
A gravely voice echoes in his head.
"What a meaning less trade, foolish monk."
[[FAIL->The Mage's Trial]](set: $monk to true)The monk reaches into his pocket to find a small lump of bread.
He gently rips off a small piece and sets it nearby. He sprinkles some crumbs around it as well.
A crack echoes through the canopy as a branch begins to tumble out of it. It falls, headed directly towards the beetles. The monk quickly strikes the branch mid air and shatters it to dust.
The beetles quickly scamper back to a nook under the tree roots with their newly found food.
A warm rush fills the monk, soon followed by a blinding light.
[[PASS->The Mage's Trial]]The mage looks up to find a bustling class room with dim lit red sconces before him. Students mingle in small groups and the smell of strange chemicals fill the air, a particularly sulfuric smell being the most pungent amongst them.
The mage suddenly realizes that the class has its graduation exam at the end of the day.
His last study session proved unfruitful on only a couple topics and this is the last class day before the exam. He is the top scorer in the class, but knows some of the topics didn't sink in.
Will you...

However, exam time comes quicker than expected.
The exam starts and he sees that the questions focus on the topics he didn't understand.
As a result, he isn't able to finish even half the problems before the time is up.
His head sinks in to his hands.
A low gravely voice echoes in his head.
"Arrogant mage, too prideful to accept the help of others. That was the cause of your downfall. Now despair, never being able to help those most important to you."
[[FAIL->The Assassin's Trial]](set: $mage to true)The Mage decides to pull up to a near by study group of classmates. They eagerly accept and begin sharing each others knowledge on the subjects. The Mage, unexpectedly learns a piece about those confusing topics.
By the time the test comes around the questions themselves piece the puzzle together for The Mage.
He confidently fills out the test in a quarter of the alotted time and hands in his paper with confidence. He hurriedly exits the class room as a feeling of warmth fills his person.
Soon after, a blinding light fills his vision.
[[PASS->The Assassin's Trial]](set: $mage to false)The Mage tries to relax and when exam time comes he does his best to get to work.
However, the test focuses on the topics he did not understand and as a result he ends up not even finishing half the test by the end of the time.
The mage sinks his head into his arms.
A gravely voice echoes in his head.
"You took it to easy, arrogant mage."
[[FAIL->The Assassin's Trial]]The Assassin's looks up to see himself infront of an abandoned underground storage house.
Memories come rushing towards him as he remembers a gang, whose leader he killed, has taken his wife and daughter hostage.
He has a single dagger, up his wrist and a special ace hidden under his shirt as they told him to come unarmed.
He kicks open the door and the gang members greet him with a knife pressed to the throat of his family.
He looks around and sees a ricketly, wooden platform hung by thin rope hanging above them.
Behind them is a steam pipe.

A blade soon pierces the assassin from behind.
As he collapses to the floor, a gravely voice echoes in his head.
"Foolish assassin, luck seems to be far from your side today."
