The protagonist wakes up in their own bed, it is morning.
A pain starts to grow from the bottom on their neck toward their temples.
Colors are stingingly vibrant
They reluctantly pull off the covers and stand up.
Empathy bar is half full.
[[Go to the bathroom to take a hot shower]]
[[Exit your room to find your parent and tell them you are not feeling well]]
Your younger sibling is already in the bathroom.
They seem distressed and disorganized trying to get ready for school.
Will you help them?
[[Express concern over why they seem so unsettled]]
[[Push them out of the bathroom so you can take a shower in attempt to relieve your headache]][[Enter the hallway]]Dialog between siblings goes here; sibling is concerned about a low level issue such as how to dress/ look for school which is something you don't worry about. Make a joke to make them feel better.
Points are added to the empathy bar.
Your headache increases in intensity but is still bearable.
[[Enter the hallway]] Points are deducted from the empathy bar.
Although your headache has diminshed slightly, you are still feeling very strange.
How are you going to feel better?
[[Exit your room to find your parent and tell them you are not feeling well]] See the photos on the walls in the hallway of you, your sibling, your dad, and your mom (who has passed away).
Points are added to the empathy bar.
[[Find your dad]]Your dad is sitting at the dining room table, staring with a furrowed brow at a stack of papers in one hand.
He doesn't immediately notice your presence.
[[Sit down with your dad and discuss what is bothering him]]
Your dad explains in detail about how that he has lost his job over a complaint by a malicious and powerful client.
You love your dad, you hate to see him in pain.
You give him a hug.
Empathy bar fills all the way up.
Your headache becomes excrutiating.
Your vision goes completely white.
Your vision slowly comes back.
You look around, you are not at home next to your dad in the dining room.
You are in your dad's office, sitting at his desk.
The phone on the desk begins to ring just as the powerful client walks in.
[[Answer the phone]]
It is your elderly grandmother on the phone (your dad's mother-in-law).
The call is important, you tell the client it will only be a minute and offer for them to take a seat.
This makes the client grow impatient (body language of the client starts to change). They aggressively sit down with their arms crossed.
You get off the phone and thank the client for their patience.
Proceed to ask what you can do for them.
Client cannot be appeased, enters a rage, and storms out of the office.
They threaten to speak to your boss and let you know they can get you fired.
How will you handle the situation?
[[Take revenge against client and quit the job]]
[[Make things right]]
This client is obviously malicious and selfish. They must be punished for hurting your father and his career.
You continue to release all the client's information, personal and otherwise, to the public on the internet.
The client's life has been ruined and you quit the job.
Points are deducted from the empathy bar.
Your vision goes white once again..
[[Return to reality (apathy)]] Follow the client to your boss's office.
This throws the client off guard.
Boss asks what the problem is.
Apologize to the client in front of your boss while explaining the situation and how you meant only to be helpful toward the client.
Boss speaks to the client and gets him to calm down.
Turns out the client just found out his partner had been cheating on him and was directing the anger and frustration at you.
You had not actually done anything wrong.
The client apologizes.
The job is saved.
Your vision goes white again..
[[Return to reality (empathy)]]
Empathy bar returns to half full.
You are standing in front of your father in the dining room.
There are no papers on the table.
He is having a cup of coffee and seems to be content.
He asks you if anything is wrong.
You say you need to see a doctor there is something wrong but you do not explain to him what you just experienced.
You ask him if he has work today.
He does but he can take the day off to take care of you.
You insist you can take yourself but highly appreciate him for offering.
[[Take yourself to the doctor]] Points are added to the apathy bar
You begin to read a magazine near you about the psychlogical studies on the signs of a sociopath.
[[Your name is called to enter the doctor's office (apathy)]]Patient proceeds to describe to you the cycle of illness they have been going through for months now because of poor life choices (brought on by depression after their mother unexpectedly passed away).
Their life has fallen apart because of their struggle with addiction.
They can't seem to get away from alcohol and other drugs no matter how hard they try.
Empathy bar fills up all the way.
Your headache intensifies.
Your vision goes white.
Your vision slowly comes back.
You are at a liquor store staring at the shelves of alcohol.
Your face is wet with tears; you are the patient you met in the waiting room.
You can smell cigarettes on your jacket.
A will power bar appears.
The will power bar is dangerously low as you continue to stare at the shelf.
It's extremely difficult to look away.
You involuntarily reach out one hand toward a handle of whiskey.
[[Try to fight the urge]]
[[Giving in is easy]]
You come back to reality.
Your father is no longer sitting at the dining room table.
He is curled up in fetal position on the couch, facing away from you.
You try to wake him but your attempt is ineffective.
You give up.
[[Take yourself to the doctor]]You are now in the waiting room of the doctor's office.
A very sickly looking but relatively young patient sits down next to you and asks what you're in there for.
They smell badly of alcohol and cigarettes.
[[Ignore them and move to a different seat]]
[[Engage in conversation]] You enter the doctor's office and the nurse takes your blood pressure and temperature.
Proceeds to ask you a few questions.
Shortly after, the doctor walks in and introduces himself.
He seems exhausted and very worked.
He tells you he is going to run some basic physical tests on you.
He proceeds to check your lungs and heart beat.
The physical touch causes your empathy bar to increase.
[[Run out of the office to avoid another episode]]
[[Stay in the office to see if the doctor can help you while risking another episode]]
You can't stop your hand from reaching for the alcohol.
You decide to drop to your knees before you can grab it.
Will power points are added to the bar.
The cashier sees you collapse and runs over to help you.
You are laughing uncontrollably.
You have successfully avoided the alcohol.
Now you must get out of the liquor store.
The cashier is concerned and offers to call you a ride home.
You thank them but prefer to get home on your own.
You don't dare look back at the liquor shelf.
You continue laughing, your body will not allow you to get up.
Hoping the cashier will get uncomfortable and kick you out, you pretend to be insane.
Will power points get added.
The cashier grabs you by the collar and drags you out.
Will power bar gets points added with every step taken.
The bar is now full.
You are out the door.
You cry tears of relief.
Sweat falls from your brow.
Your vision goes white again..
[[Return to reality (empathy 2)]]You have decided you don't want the responsibility to alter this person's life.
You swiftly grab the handle and walk quickly to the register.
You avoid eye contact with the cashier while asking for a new pack of cigarettes.
You slap down the money and walk out without collecting your change.
Your dealer is waiting in their car outside for you with their engine running.
You get in the passenger seat.
Your vision goes white again..
[[Return to reality (apathy 2)]]Empathy bar returns to half full.
You feel stronger somehow, as if you're getting to know your powers.
There is no longer a sickly patient sitting next to you.
You are alone in the waiting room.
[[Your name is called to enter the doctor's office (empathy)]]
Points are deducted from the empathy bar.
You are back in your seat in the waiting room.
The sickly patient next to you seems to be losing ability to stay conscious.
You move away from them.
[[Your name is called to enter the doctor's office (apathy)]]
You enter the doctor's office and the nurse takes your blood pressure and temperature.
You close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
You are able to keep your empathy bar from filling up all the way.
[[Continue speaking to the doctor]]You exit the building and try to figure out where to go.
There is a bus stop nearby (about a half mile walk)
There is also a unlocked bicycle just on the corner a few feet away.
[[Walk to the bus and wait]]
[[Steal the bicycle]]You try to keep the conversation one sided.
Not allowing the doctor to make any small talk, you proceed to explain what has been happening to you throughout the day.
You're scared the doctor will think you are crazy.
The doctor, too tired and busy to really be concerned, has concluded nothing is wrong with you. You simply are experiencing some stress.
You're disappointed in this interaction.
As a doctor, he is supposed to help you but has failed.
Points are deducted from the empathy bar.
[[Exit the building]]The bus arrives and thank goodness it is empty.
You don't want to risk having to interact will anyone else.
You're exhausted.
You decide to take the bus to where your mother was buried.
Hopefully you will find some clarity there.
About half an hour passes and you arrive at the site.
You walk through the gates of the cemetary and find your mother's headstone.
You get closer.
You touch the engraving with one finger.
Your heart pounds one great beat.
You're knocked to the ground.
Your vision goes black..
[[End game (empathy)]]
Empathy bar is completely depleted.
You bike until the sun goes down.
You have no idea where you are.
You find an abandoned farm house on the outskirts of a forest.
You decide to stay there.
[[End game (apathy)]]
You exit the building and try to figure out where to go.
You need some time to process what has happened to you.
There is a bus stop nearby (about a half mile walk)
There is also a unlocked bicycle just on the corner a few feet away.
[[Walk to the bus and wait]]
[[Steal the bicycle]]You want to be as far away from people as possible.
You never want to interact with another soul.
You will be alone forever, never to feel empathy again. You wake up in a hospital bed.
You can't move.
An oxygen mask covers your face.
You have IVs in both arms.
All you can do is watch.
Your dad walks into the room.
Trailing behind is your younger sibling but they are so little.
And one more child reluctantly walks in...
... it's you as a child.
You are your mother.
You cannot speak; you can only listen.
Your vision is starting to fade.
Your father sobs while holding your hand.
You as a child sits up on the bed and touches your shoulder.
"I love you, mommy."
Suddenly, your vision brightens.
Colors are exploding.
You can no longer see anything but lights.
Your heartbeat fades.
With one last exhalation, the lights go out.
You melt into the darkness.
You die from feeling too much.
You proceed to explain what has been happening to you throughout the day.
You're scared the doctor will think you are crazy.
The doctor, too tired and busy to really be concerned, has concluded nothing is wrong with you. You simply are experiencing some stress.
