Specifically, IL2, IFN- γ, and TNF-α are considered Type 1 cytokines, while
IL4, IL5, IL6, and IL10 are considered Type 2 cytokines. Type 1 and Type 2 cytokines
negatively counter-regulate each other’s production. The psoriatic phenotype is promoted
by type 1 cytokines, whereas HIV infection is classically thought to promote a Type 1 to
Type 2 cytokine shift.
