The cold morning air bites at the back of your neck as plumes of steam escape from your mouth.
The sun hasn't risen yet, and you can feel the stagnant air gnaw at every inch of your exposed skin. You should have dressed for the weather.
''[[Marcella]]:'' Do you need my [[coat?]] I brought an extra.

(set: $sandwich to "false")Marcella Orwin is the secondary lead on the [[expedition]] and an expert in archeology. She goes by Marcy but you've been too nervous to call her that and it seems weird to change it up now.
She did months of research to locate the site, after all, her doctoral thesis is riding on this.
She's been visibly anxious since you got to [[Arein]] yesterday.

(set: $team to $team +1)Marcella's coat is one of those puffy snow coats with fur around the hood.
It looks extraordinarily cozy right now.
[[Take Marcella's coat]]
[[Refuse]] You're looking for an ancient ruin, at least 3,000 years old by Marcella's estimates. She said it belonged to a civilization whose name you can't even pronounce.
You asked to come three weeks ago and you've been travelling for ten days.
It's felt like a lot longer.
[[Back ->Marcella]] The small town was certainly less than you expected. Dozens of abandoned buildings littered the main street, forgotten decades ago at least.
There was something dissapointing about the state of the place, something that bothered you. There isn't a single car around from less than 20 years ago.
If Marcella was right, this place was sitting right on top of ancient ruins and untold treasure! And yet, the people here have been forgotten by the rest of the world.
[[Look around]] You grab the puffy jacket and put it around yourself. You pull the hood up to keep your ears warm as well. It's extremely comfy.
Marcella smiles at you.
''Marcella:'' Really, I told you it would be cold here, I have no idea why you didn't bring a jacket.
[[Look around]]
(set: $jacket to "true")You shake your head, refusing Marcella's coat. She looks at you with concern and puts the coat around herself, rubbing her arms to warm them up.
[[Look around]] You and your team ([[Marcella]], [[Elliot]], and [[Franklin]]) are waiting at the edge of [[Arein]].
[[Dr. Jacobs]] left for a car at least an hour before anyone was awake. Had he not left a note, no one would even know where he went.

[You look down at [[yourself]].]Elliot Marshall is a journalist working for one of the biggest newspapers in One City and a good friend of Marcella's. He asked to come on the expedition to chronicle the journey.
He seems skeptical that it will be fruitful. A few times he's joked about exactly how wrong it could all go.
Right now he's inspecting his camera lenses for any scratches or scuffs.

[You're wearing Marcella's jacket, its warm.]
As you look around, a pit forms in your stomach as you question why Marcella let you come in the first place.
[[Maybe you can do this]]
[[You don't belong here]]
Maybe you can figure this out.
You don't have a lot to work with, but you consider yourself pretty smart.
You may not know nearly as much as those around you, but you can help in some way.
You're sure of it.
Suddenly, a [[puttering engine]] engine approaches, tearing you away from your thoughts. You don't know anything about archeology
anthropology,
architecture,
lingustics,
nothing.
Hell, you barely know history.
You're worthless.
And you don't even know why you're here.
Suddenly, a [[puttering engine]] snaps you out of your reflections.A small, beaten up, yellow car approaches with Dr. Jacobs inside. He exits the car door with a lit cigar in his mouth.
''Dr. Jacobs:'' Sorry to keep you waiting everyone. It's a tight fit, but I think it can work.
He makes eye contact with everyone other than you.
[[Get in the car]]You examine Elliot a little closer, he's covered in camera equipment. Despite him making his skepticism very clear, he brought a surplus of film with him.
Your eyes catch a glimpse of [[something]] under his beige cargo vest.
[[Back ->Look around]]You don't know why Dr. Jacobs has been so short with you.
You've barely talked to him and yet he seems to see right through you.
He doesn't seem to understand why you're even here.
[[Back ->Look around]]Franklin and Elliot fill the rear of small two-door car quickly, awkwardly climbing over the front seats to reach the back.
[[Get in the passenger seat]]
[[Get in the back seat]]You accidently bump into Marcella as you walk toward the passenger seat.
''Marcella:'' Oops! Sorry, I didn't realize you wanted to sit up here, I'll take the back, then.
You climb in shortly after, taking note at how cramped the back seat looks.
Dr. Jacobs climbs in after you, shooting you a look of disapproval.
You're tired.
[[Close your eyes]]
[[Stay awake]]You stiffly climb into the back seat and wedge yourself between the window and Franklin's shoulder.
Marcella carefully pushes the seat back so she can enter, and sits in the passenger seat.
Dr. Jacobs closes his door, and before you know it, you're on your way to the site.
You're tired.
[[Close your eyes]]
[[Stay awake]] You drift to sleep. It's not restful. The road is bumpy and windy and the hum of the engine isn't exactly comforting.
Your head keeps falling forward as your neck gives way to sleep.
You feel embarassed, even though no one really notices.
Before long the engine's buzz stops abruptly.
[[You're here]]You manage to fight off the exhaustion, allowing the rural landscape you pass by to distract you long enough.
There are so many abandoned barns, small shacks, and destroyed fences.
Before long, the car engine stops.
[[You're here]]You've arrived at the ruin. There are small tools decorating the ground and a few assistants working to brush the debris from what little has been excavated.
[[Exit car]]You exit the car and approach the excavation site behind the rest of the team.
It's smaller than you expected. Just a small hole in what could easily be mistaken as a hut half-buried in the ground.
Eliot snaps a picture.
[[Approach the hut]]You walk near the small stone structure as Franklin dilligently writes notes as he admires the archway framing the round door.
There's a small knob on the door.
[[Turn the knob]]
[[Leave it]]The knob jiggles slightly.
It leaves a thick imprint of dust and grime on your palm.
[[Turn harder]]
[[Let go]] You keep your distance from the hut, it gives off an uncomfortable air you don't particularly like.
The stone etchings wrap around the dome-like structure. Dirt and browned moss hang on the outside.
Marcella and Dr. Jacobs approach the small door and begin examining it.
[[Meet them]]You turn the handle in either direction, this time more forcefully.
You hear a snap.
The handle just broke off of the door.
[[Oops]]Every person in sight turns to look directly at you as the snap of the handle still seems to echo in the air.
''Dr. Jacobs:'' What the HELL do you think you're doing?? Get away from there!!
He yells while rushing to separate you from the ruin.
He pauses when he sees what's in your hand.
[[Show him the handle]]
[[Keep it from him]]You hold out the small knob for the professor to see.
''Dr. Jacobs:'' I'll be damned...
He quickly snatches the knob from your hand and rushes to his makeshift [[research station.]]Dr. Jacobs examines the uneven hole where the knob was.
After thoroughly surveying it he glares at you before snatching the knob from your hands.
''Dr. Jacobs:'' Really, if you're going to interfere with our research I suggest you leave before you destroy anything else.
He walks briskly toward his makeshift [[research station.]] You let go of the handle.
Your hand is covered in dust.
''Franklin:'' Please stop touching things.
He barely looks in your direction.
[[Walk away from the hut]]
[[Turn the knob]]You wander away from the small hut, not really sure where to go from there. Eventually you see Dr. Jacobs and Marcella approach the hut.
Dr. Jacobs looks right through you.
[[Meet them]] You walk to the two leads and overhear them trying to figure out how to open the small door on the front of the hut.
Dr. Jacobs begins turning the small handle, trying to overpower the clear resistance given.
[[The handle snaps]]''Dr. Jacobs:'' DAMN IT!
He shouts as the handle snaps loudly. The assistants avert their eyes to avoid getting caught in his rage.
Dr. Jacobs pauses for a moment and quickly rushes to his [[research station.]] You follow him, making sure to keep your distance. When reaching the station he talks briefly with Marcella before rushing to the rear of the unearthed ruin.
He inserts the knob into a small hole in the ground.
The small hole churns and clicks, until a large stone slab on the ground gives way, revealing an unlit underground structure. He beckons an assistant to bring a fold-out ladder, and he quickly descends with Marcella following.
[[Enter the structure]]
[[Call to Elliot and Franklin]]The ladder creaks loudly as you swing slightly with each step. You can see a light toward the ground and it's further down than you thought.
Soon you reach the bottom of the dark chasm. Marcella has lit a lantern and is talking with Dr. Jacobs as he examines a large statue in the center of this large entryway.
Franklin and Elliot soon come down the ladder themselves and quickly begin examining seperate parts of the ruin.
[[Walk to Marcella and Dr. Jacobs]]
[[Walk to Elliot]]
[[Walk to Franklin]]Elliot and Franklin are not far off, but as you call to them they rush over and gaze in awe at the large opening.
''Elliot:'' Well let's not waste any time!

[[Walk to Franklin]]Marcella and Dr. Jacobs are engaged in heavy discussion, they're using a bunch of terms you don't understand.
As soon as you come into his line of sight, Dr. Jacobs lets out a audible sigh, as if your very presence has dirstupted his focus.
Best leave them be.
[[Walk to Elliot]]
[[Walk to Franklin]] Elliot doesn't pay you much mind as he continues snapping pictures of everything he can.
''Elliot:'' So uh... What do you do here? Are you Dr. Jacobs's assistant or something?
He doesn't look away from his camera as he says this.

They're holding a small, golden statue of a bird in their hands.
''Dr. Jacobs:'' I can't believe it... After all this research, I've finally found it!!!
Marcella's face sours when he says this.
[[BOOM]]A huge [[crash]] fills every inch of the room.

[Or maybe it was a [[bang?]]]As you run into the main area, you notice the light from the ceiling entrance darken.
