Dear Player,
Thank you for sitting through my game. I appreciate you putting aside time in your day devote your attention to something so mediocre and uninteresting. Let me just get to the point.
I created "A Cool Sword Quest" out of desperation. It's a product of my frustrations; a sublimation of anger that has been directed at myself ever since I first attempted this creative endeavour.
Creation is so unbelievably hard. So hard that I had almost given up on doing this in the first place. If you want proof, you can simply reach out to me and ask for the game I had made before this. It was an absolute mess; a juvenile attempt at "art" in the form of a barely interactive game that only served to point out how "hard" I have it. It was a pathetic 3-5 minute weeping session that was made to encapsulate my frustration with game design. It wasn't pretty. I came to hate it so much that I felt that I had to at least //try//. So that's when "A Cool Sword Quest" happened. A deliberate attempt to make something normal, but also not. A standard game with branching paths and different endings, but with a weird goal of obtaining "tokens" to reach a secret ending. This is the secret ending by the way.
People might ask if this game represents either a fiction or a memory. I would probably answer both, as the game reflects both fictitious ideas as well as both abstract and concrete concepts from my own personal memory. This is a product of the weird interrelationship this game has with //actually trying to be a game that effectively demonstrates mastery over game design concepts// and //displaying how the game itself came to fruition//.
If you want some specifics, "A Cool Sword Quest" was a random idea I had after trashing my old project that stemmed from the most basic fantasy premise I could think of. Pick from three swords, and see different outcomes. I honestly had no idea where it would go. But it was //something//, unlike the tryhard "artsy" game I had made previously. At least here, players would actually feel like they were playing something that was built for //them//, not just something that fed into the sorrows and frustrations of the creator.
Ultimately, I still think that "A Cool Sword Quest" mirrors those emotions that I have towards creation. This game is still fundamentally indulgent. It is a lot of stroking my own ego, a lot of laziness, and a lot of genuine incompetence.
I wonder if, in the end, this is any different than the game I made before. Perhaps not, as there is actual content in this game, and the player has much more agency overall.
Maybe I've gone on for too long. I'm tired. Very tired. The creation of this game is something that I've come to both love and hate. Learning new tricks in Harlowe and thinking of interesting narrative twists were some of the higher points.
So, in the end, what was the point of all of this? I don't honestly know if there is one. But I do know that I wanted you to experience every story before reading this.
The modest life lived in a hellish land.
The carefree legacy of barfighting.
The destruction of the universe.
The path without a sword.
The acceptance of death.
The totalitarian state.
The utopia.
I'll leave you with the choice. You get to determine if these stories were worth telling.
Or if they're nothing more than trash.

(transition:"dissolve")[
Dear Player,
Thank you for sitting through my game. I appreciate you putting aside time in your day devote your attention to something so mediocre and uninteresting. Let me just get to the point.
I created "A Cool Sword Quest" out of desperation. It's a product of my frustrations; a sublimation of anger that has been directed at myself ever since I first attempted a creative endeavour.
People might ask if this game represents either a fiction or a memory? I would probably answer both, as the game reflects both fictitious ideas as well as both abstract and concrete concepts from my own personal memory. This is a product of the weird interrelationship this game has with //actually trying to be a game that demonstrates game design concepts// and //displaying how this game came to fruition//.
If you want some specifics, "A Cool Sword Quest" was a random idea I had after trashing my old project that stemmed from the most basic fantasy premise I could think of. Pick three swords, and see different outcomes.
It is a lot of stroking my own ego, a lot of laziness, and a lot of half-assed bullshit.
I wonder if, in the end, this is any different than the game I made before. Perhaps not, as there is actual content in this game, and the player has much more agency overall.
Maybe I've gone on for too long. I'm tired. Very tired. The creation of this game is something that I've come to both love and hate. Learning new tricks and Harlowe and thinking of interesting narrative twists were some of the higher points.
