      <title>"It's the Water that Makes you Drunk" - A Celebration in Geophysics and Oceanography - 1982, In Honor of Walter Munk on his 65th Birthday, October 19, 1982</title>

      <description>The title quote, which was recounted during these birthday festivities, derives from a dinner during Walter's earth rotation days. W. Markowitz of the U.S. Naval Observatory told of the logical scientist who set out to determine the cause of drunkenness. On successive days he consumed large quantities of scotch and water, bourbon and water, and vodka and water. Becoming drunk in each case he concluded that the water was responsible. Markowitz went on to find a parallel in the authorship of anumber of then-recent papers on the rotation of the earth (e.g. 49, 60, 72 in the bibliography), singling out Walter as the common ingredient in this infiltration of geophysicists into what had been the domain of astronomers.</description>

      <title>Submarine Topography of the Continental Slope of the Northwest Gulf of Mexico</title>

      <description>A chart of the continental slope of the northwest Gulf of Mexico, contoured at an interval ot 50 fathoms, reveals an irregular topography of high relief. The striking basins, ridges and trough-like valleys of the slope, and escarpment are described. Slumping, folding, and faulting are suggested as the cause of the slope topography, and the escarpment is interpreted as a fault zone separating the stable deep sea basin from the unstable elope area. Evidence from foraminiferal fauna distribution in cores is cited in support of slumping.</description>

      <title>The Research Ship HORIZON</title>

      <description>The R/V &lt;em&gt;Horizon&lt;/em&gt; was one of the first of the post World War II oceanographic research vessels, and one of the most famous. It is a rare senior oceanographer anywhere in the world who has not at least seen the ship. The same is true of the Russian&lt;em&gt;Vityaz&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Ob&lt;/em&gt;, the French &lt;em&gt;Calypso&lt;/em&gt;, and the American &lt;em&gt;Atlantis&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Vema&lt;/em&gt;. Many of these research vessels were converted for ocean studies: &lt;em&gt;Calypso &lt;/em&gt;was a former Royal Navy minesweeper; &lt;em&gt;Vityaz &lt;/em&gt;was a German banana boat acquired in war reparation payments; &lt;em&gt;Horizon &lt;/em&gt;was originally a small Navy tug.</description>

      <title>The index of refraction of seawater</title>

      <description>SIO Reference 76-1. ft smoothly varying and internally self-consistent set of tables of the index of refraction of seawater with respect to air are presented. The dependence of the index on salinity (0 to 43°/00), temperature (0 to 30°C), wavelength(400 to 700 nm) and pressure (0 to 1100 kg/cm2 gage) has been fully covered. The relevant literature from prior to 1900 through the present has been extensively reviewed. Various comparisons between indices obtained from these sources and the tables presented have been performed suggesting an overall accuracy of the tabulated index values of about 3 x 10~s at atmospheric pressure and 1 x 10~4 at higher pressures. The extreme values encountered were 1.32921 and 1.36844, while the average slopes of the index surface, over the range of the variables considered, are An/As « 0.009/43°/00, An /At« - 0.002/30°C, An/AA« -0.013/300 nm, An/Ap« 0.015/1100 kg/cm2. Coast Guard are analyzed by pro-bit analysis to determine visual thresholds and measures of variance of the thresholds. Each of seventeen conditions affecting the sighting range is studied separately to determine its effect.       <title>Contrast thresholds as a function of retinal position and target size for the light-adapted eye</title>

Binocular visual thresholds for targets of several sizes and occupying various positions in the visual field have been measured at photopic adaptation luminance. Circular targets of positive contrast were presented for 0.33 second, chosen as a duration typical of the dwell times used in normal visual search procedures. Four young male observers with normal vision were used as subjects for the experiment. The data, based on approximately 80,000 observations, exhibit the dependence of the visual contrast threshold upon target size and position. The findings of the study differ, as anticipated, from other data which relate to the case of very brief (10 millisecond) target flashes, and are believed more suitable than the latter for the construction of visibility lobes used in the prediction of sighting ranges. Biologists who are interested in the primary productivity of the ocean are often unable to make productivity determinations by the "in situ" technique because of the demands of other groups on the ship's time. Under these conditions it has been the practice to use a substitute technique called the "deck incubator" technique, in which the sample of plankton-bearing ocean water is transferred to a deck incubator and allowed to propagate for an appropriate length of time before determining the 14C uptake.From a radiometric point of view these two techniques differ to a considerable degree. In the "in situ" technique the plankton-bearing ocean water is returned to its original depth location where propagation takes place at normal radiant energy levels and with normal spectral and geometric distribution of the radiant energy.       <title>Practice effects in the performance of a simple visual discrimination task by initially naive observers</title>

      <description>SIO Reference 62-21. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of early-practice during training in a simple visual discrimination task. Four experimentally naive subjects completed a series of fiftyxexperimental sessions, and their data, based upon threshold estimates reduced from 50,000 observations, were examined for both short-term and long-term practice effects. Short-term effects were found to be limited to very early sessions, with essential stability of sensitivity having been reached by the fifth session. This result is consonant with other studies of training effects in the visual domain. Long term effects, up to the fiftieth session at least, were not found. It has been concluded that naive observers may confidently be assumed to have attained a stable level of performance after very few training sessions in tasks requiring a simple discrimination.</description>

Flight 112, during which data in this report were measured, was one of these flights. Part I of this report, SIO Reforence 60-22, of April I960, presented data as a c atalogue of recorded optical measurements less sky luminance and sky radiance distributions. This part of the report, Part II, presents the sky luminance distribution as it varied with altitude, zenith angle, and azimuth with respect to the sun. Systematic data relating target size to the contrast necessary for detection at various levels of adapting luminance have heretofore been limited to 6 and lower. In many practical situations, however, larger target subtenses are involved, and the solution of visibility problems by established nomographic means has been impossible owing to lack of input visual performance data for large targets. The hypothesis has been advanced that the limiting target situation might reasonably be equivalent to the instance in which the entire visual field is divided, as it becomes fatuous to speak of targets larger than can be accommodated in the binocular visual field.An experiment was performed which yielded data for both the upper limiting circular target size of the previously used data of the Tiffany research (6°) and for a "split field" in which the target comprised a luminance increment on one half of the visual field.       <description>SIO Reference 60-45. The function of a photoelectric system should be to improve upon the performance capabilities of unaided visual search. This report will therefore start with a very brief analysis of the visual detection capability. Succeeding sections of the report will discuss each parameter of the search geometry and indicate, where possible, modification of the parameter which will lead to improved performance. The final sections will describe a photoelectric system capable of incorporating the improvements indicated in the paragraphs which precede it and capable of day and night operation at a performance level surpassing the specified Navy requirements.</description>

      <title>Radiative transfer on discrete spaces</title>

      <description>SIO Reference 59-53. We shall be concerned here with a study of radiative transfer processes on discrete rather than continuous optical media. That is, we shall explore the consequences of replacing the usual geometric setting for radiative transfer processes — namely some continuum of points in three dimensional euclidean space £ — by a spatially bounded set of points, finite in number, each of which is located in E3 in accordance with some explicit rule of selection. Each point of the set is then assigned certain scattering and absorbing properties with respect to impinging radiant energy, and each is generally allowed to interact radiometrically in a specified way with a certain preselected subset of the given collection. The main object of the present study is to formulate and solve, within this context ;ind on a phenomenological level, the problem of the steady state radiance distribution at each point of the set, under prescribed boundary conditions.</description>

      <description>SIO Reference 59-55. The discrete-space approach to radiative transfer theory leads to a derivation of the principles of invariance. The principles of invariance which once were without any links to the main body of radiative transfer theory are shown to be derivable by elementary means from the local interaction principle. This latter principle was introduced earlier ^ and shown to possess sufficient detail to allow a formulation and solution of the basic transfer equations on every discrete space. The local interaction principle thus serves as a unifying principle from which the entire discrete theory of radiative transfer can be constructed. By suitably designed convergence arguments these results may be carried over to the continuous theory. Dr. Morris and her staff at the Visibility Laboratory extended the war-time experimental approach to include studies of the visual detectability of separate pattern components and thereby achieved a successful solution to the patterned target visibility problem. The data for this study were collected and analysed and the theory described in this report was developed at the Visibility Laboratory ' during the period from August 1955 to December 1956. This basis for calculating visual detection ranges for nonuniform targets has been in routine use by the Laboratory since that time.</description>

The paper "Image Transmission by the4 Troposphere I," published in the Journal of the Optical Society ofAmerica, discusses this program. In that paper correlation betweencertain optical and meteorological parameters is indicated. The studyof this correlation has continued and this report describes the resultsof data gathered from a second formation flight of two airplanes, theinstrumented B-29 and a microwave refractometer-equipped C-131 fromPatrick Air Force Base squadron.</description>

When a steady point source of radiant energy is turned on in optical medium such as a cloud, a lake, or some given region of an ocean, there is a small yet finite period of time in which the light field produced by the source is in the process of building up to a steady state. During this period the radiant energy from the source is transmitted at the speed of light to the farthest reaches of the medium while simultaneously being diffused and rediffused within the characteristic spheroid (the interior of the region defined by the wavefront and the boundaries of the medium). Even though this transmission, diffusion, and final attainment of the steady state configuration of the light field take place in a relatively small interval of time, an enormous collection of complex radiometric events takes place.In this note we systematically isolate some of these radiometric events and show that they may be arrayed in orderly and informative sequence in time and space....</description>

      <title>Directly observable quantities for light fields in natural hydrosols</title>

The increasing accuracy of experimental determinations of the optical absorption aid scattering properties of oceans, lakes, and harbors has necessitated -xact knowledge of the possible interrelations between these properties. The classical two-flow analysis of the light field has been an important source of such relations. While it continues to be a source of useful simple models for engineering calculations, it has become inadequate to collate the data of basic experimental research. The two-flow theory is reformulated to meet these experimental needs. The reformulation is based on the exact equations for the light field in scattering-absorbing media. The main results give useful relations between the magnitudes of the down-welling and upwelling irradiances, their depth-rates of change, and the scattering and absorption properties of natural hydrosols. The reformulations are applicable in general to arbitrarily stratified plane-parallel media.</description>

      <title>Model for radiance distributions in natural hydrosols</title>

      <description>SIO Reference 58-42. A simple model for radiance distributions in optically deep natural hydrosols is derived from the equation of transfer* for radiance Using a special form of the path function derived from the classical two-flow Schuster differential equations for irradiance. The model yields explicit expressions for the apparent radiance of submerged objects and the contrast transmittance for arbitrary paths of sight in the hydrosol. The model reproduces the major features of experimentally determined radiance distributions under a variety of external lighting conditions.</description>

      <title>Canonical forms of the equation of transfer</title>

      <description>SIO Reference 58-47. The conventional form of the equation of transfer in radiative transfer theory is tailored principally to fit the needs of theoretical investigations. The quantities appearing in the equation, while readily measurable, do not allow the equation to express their interconnections in a way which is helpful to the intuition of the experimenter. The purpose of this note is to present a reformulation of the equation of transfer which appears to be of help in the task of collating and understanding the experimentally obtained properties of the optical medium. Quite interestingly, this reformulation appears to hold the key to the solution of one of the long-standing theoretical problems of this field, namely the problem of the existence and form of the asymptotic radiance distribution in an arbitrary medium with arbitrary external lighting conditions.       <title>Time-dependent principles of invariance</title>

In this note, we exhibit the formulation of the requisite statements of the four tijne-dependent principles of invariance and show that they are sufficient todorivethe functional relations governing the tine-dependent R and T functions and their corresponding integral operator. The derivations follow closely the pattern used in some earlier studies of the stationary case, in this way we add to the evidence that the classical procedures initiated by Chandrasekhar can be extended to more general setting For brevity the present discussion is limited to plane-parallel media. However the media will be assumed finite, non-separable, and such that the attenuate and scattering functions are generally dependent on time.</description>

      <title>The reduction of contrast by atmospheric boil</title>

      <description>SIO Reference 58-35. It is shown that the probability of receiving light from an object viewed through a turbulent atmosphere follows a normal Gaussian distribution. Furthermore the root mean square angular deflection of the points of any object \\dll be proportional to the square root of the object-to-observer distance.From relations of the type described in the examples, it is possible to predict the apparent contrast throughout a given scene, provided the inherent contrast distribution, the Optical Air State, and the range of the target is known. The Optical Air State for a given condition of atmosphere can be measured using a telephotometer and a series of long thin black bars of varying widths.</description>

      <title>Physical, Chemical, Current Measurement and Biological Data Swan Song Expedition 21 August – 1 December 1961</title>

      <description>&lt;p&gt;Work on the last three legs of the Swan Song Expedition (5 September-1 December 1961) aboard the RV Argo was concentrated on the study of the Cromwell Current. The specific purpose was to determine how the Cromwell Current broke down as it travelled eastward toward and beyond the Galapagos Islands. On the last two legs of the expedition a limited biological program was conducted by members of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). This report includes most of the pertinent data concerned with the Cromwell Current study, namely some 91 hydrographic stations and 65 current measuring stations as well as most of the data from the 29 biological stations and 42 primary productivity observations (the latter group of which were made while the ship was underway).&lt;/p&gt;</description>
