Warm Hand-Offs Framework: K-16 Ecosystems of Support

The Warm Hand-Offs Framework aims to support students, schools, and educational partners by spotlighting navigational supports to help students throughout their educational journey as they transition from K-12 to community college and/or a 4-year college or university. Developed as part of the Sacramento K-16 Priority Student Populations workgroup (which includes K-16, community college, and 4-year regional partners) in collaboration with UC Davis, the framework outlines the educational pathways students may pursue and the supports available whether students plan to enroll in a 2-year or 4-year college; transfer; or directly enter the workforce. Overall, each of these areas (advising and counseling; college academic retention initiatives and programs; career pathway supports) help to smooth postsecondary pathways for students, highlighting when a warm hand-off can occur for a student between systems. This document is intended to serve as a living resource to help facilitate...

You Belong Here: Impact Report, 2021-2022

One of our UC Davis themes is “Outgrow the Expected.” This report serves as a reminder that UC Davis is indeed outgrowing even our own expectations as we do ever more to be compassionate, inclusive, thoughtful, insightful, aware, and action-oriented in our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, or DEI, practice.

While this report focuses on the work of our office, we can’t help but include stories and quotes that reflect the many collaborators and partners that work with us. Our staff simply could not make all of this happen without our colleagues across campus. DEI is—and must be—a collective effort.

The cover of our report reflects this reality. Seen on the UC Davis Human Resources website and on the wall as art at the Manetti-Shrem museum, the phrase, “You Belong Here” became the DEI office’s mantra for reaching out to our campus community. Whether you were arriving to campus for the first time or returning from a long break due to Covid-19, we want YOU to know that...

Community Equation

The Community Equation is a conceptual framework developed to illustrate how UC Davis engages, equips, empowers, and elevates its diverse community. Grounded in the Principles of Community, the model represents the campus as a collective whole (C), composed of distinct groups and identities (ci) that contribute to the university’s shared mission. By expressing the balance of attention and resources (α) needed for each group—from rising scholars and employees to patients and community partners—the framework underscores the importance of inclusive excellence in advancing student success, faculty achievement, health, and community well-being. The Community Equation highlights how intentional support across multiple segments strengthens the collective, ensuring opportunity and belonging for all.

On March 23, 2023, we hosted the first HSI Showcase at UC Davis. As part of the UC system of learning, the HSI showcase has become an essential aspect of getting together as a community and discuss what it means to be HSI and emerging HSI. Hosted by UC Davis in collaboration with University of California Hispanic Serving Institution Initiative, this day of HSI Immersion, Discovery and Community was incredibly special and one that will be a part of UC Davis history.

Healthy Yolo Together (HYT), also known as Healthy Davis Together (HDT), is a joint project of the City of Davis and UC Davis. It is designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through the development of access to testing and vaccines, the dissemination of accurate information to counter misinformation, and the facilitation of a gradual return to regular city activities. The project commenced in September 2020 with a focus on Davis but later expanded to Yolo County.

Professors Leveraging a Community of Engagement (P.L.A.C.E.) with CAMPSSAH Year-end Report, 2020-2021

Efforts to diversify faculty often focus on opportunities for hiring while overlooking the creation of environments that engender opportunities for faculty development in the long-term. These missed opportunities hamper scholarly productivity and erode the job satisfaction necessary to retain new hires through tenure and into the full professor ranks. P.L.A.C.E. with CAMPSSAH positions the center as an interdisciplinary hub for research and service activities for faculty of color, under represented minorities (URM), and faculty whose work forms the foundation of inclusive excellence at UC Davis. To foster holistic development, sustained growth, and retention of these faculty, this endeavor invests resources in three areas: community, leadership, and recognition.

The Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (OHEDI) created this toolkit to support your efforts to launch the Inclusion, Diversity, Anti-Racism, and Equity, aka the “I-DARE” Taskforce Initiative in your department. This one year initiative is designed to catalyze the formation of departmental DEI taskforces to address immediate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) needs, train future leaders, and most importantly utilize a standardized departmental needs assessment to develop sustainable departmental and institutional action plans to advance the UC Davis Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Strategic Vision. The Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Vision developed five goals and objectives from nearly thirty campus community “engagement forums” and individual and group meetings with faculty, staff, and students. These goals are summarized below. You can access the full document at https://diversity.ucdavis.edu/about/strategic-plan. Furthermore, we will elaborate each...

Faculty Development and Diversity First Generation Health Faculty Interviews

As part of the UC Davis Health Faculty Development and Diversity program, 18 interviews were conducted among faculty from the Schools of Health who self-identified as first-generation college graduates (“First Gen Health”). First Gen Health faculty told the story of their path to academic health and described significant factors and challenges in their success in becoming a faculty member. Qualitative analyses of de-identified interview transcripts were conducted to ascertain common experiences and themes. Findings from the first-generation project suggest common factors found across all interviews that influenced or continue to promote success among first generation faculty in attaining their career goals in academic health. In addition, several factors were also identified as challenges to achieve success (as defined by participants) throughout distinct stages of their career towards becoming faculty members.Findings from the UC Davis Schools of Health First Generation Faculty...

Annual Impact Report, July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021

When I reflect back, not only on the year covered in this report, but the past eighteen months, I consider how much effort it has taken to make sure that tens of thousands in our campus and community are safe and healthy (physically and mentally), yet also are able to meet their basic needs, be productive, and serve others. It has been a daunting task, but we are UC Davis, and UC Davis has taken this challenge head on.

Investing in Rising Scholars and Serving the State of California: What It Means for UC Davis to be a Hispanic Serving Institution

In June 2018 Chancellor May invited twenty-nine distinguished scholars, administrators, community members, and students to serve on a task force to help UC Davis define what success should mean for a research intensive, public land-grant, Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in California. The Task Force was charged with examining and making recommendations to continue to improve the success and well-being of all our students, including our Latinx and Chicanx students, and to identify the resources and reforms necessary to achieve these goals. The task force report was released in 2019.

Taking Action: Impact Report, 2019-2020

Within a few months of 2020, we’ve experienced challenges that have grasped the world, the nation, and UC Davis, e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic, greater attention to loss of Black lives to violence, and greater recognition of the incidence and impacts of ongoing racism. These challenges continue, and our community has been traumatized—seeking answers and ways to cope. However, despite these difficulties, there is strength, resilience, and a continued—indeed a collaborative—commitment to equity and justice. Ensuring that justice is served is not limited to the work of a few, it is up to all of us to join in and work together.

Embracing UC Davis’ Hispanic-Serving Identity as an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution

The University of California, Davis (UC Davis) has yet to reach 25% Latinx undergraduate fulltime enrollment, the threshold necessary to formally become a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Nonetheless, the campus’ commitment to its HSI initiative and vision stands apart from any official U.S. Department of Education (ED) designation. For more than three years, UC Davis has vigorously developed and pursued its own HSI vision of institutional transformation. Together, campus staff, faculty, students, and alums conceptualized the opportunity at hand and articulated HSI priorities at UC Davis in a path-breaking 2019 report, “Investing in Rising Scholars and Serving California: What it Means for UC Davis to be a Hispanic-Serving Institution.” This brief will highlight the momentum leading to the report as well as what has occurred afterwards in terms of implementation.
