Urban landscapes impact the microbiome of the bee, Osmia lignaria

As a bee forages for pollen and nectar, it acquires beneficial and pathogenic microbes from flowers. In human-influenced landscapes, variation in vegetative and floral diversity may therefore influence bee-microbe interactions. This study asks how variation in the resources available to bees in urban settings influences the composition of the microbiome and infection by fungal parasites in the Blue Orchard Bee, Osmia lignaria. Bees were installed and collected in 17 urban garden field sites in along the central coast of California. At each garden we measured local vegetation using random sampling in 1x1m plots at the center of each garden. We determined landcover composition with ArcGIS. To determine if bee diversity influences microbiome composition, we measured bee diversity at each site using visual transects. At the time of bee installation, we also reared a subset of bees in sterile petri dishes as controls to determine if the environment is important for microbiome...

Multi-UAV Path Coordination Based on Uncertainty Estimation

One of the current autonomous systems research area in civilian and military applications is finding robust methods to track a ground area of interest (AOI) or airborne toxic substance. In case that the AOI is a spreading phenomenon (e.g., a wild forest fire), it is clear that a cooperative strategy for searching and monitoring with multiple UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is beneficial compared to one vehicle. Multi-UAV Systems have the ability to share tasks and therefore accomplish the mission objectives with greater efficiency. The main purpose of this study is to suggest an estimation approach that is carried out using statistical methods of quantized observations for multi-UAVs' path re-planning to minimize the uncertainty of the monitored area. The UAVs share their observations and estimate the disaster area periphery with associated mapping for the level of confidence. The study presents a thorough analysis of the monitoring algorithm which operates as an uncertainty-oriented...

Impacts of Sexual Assault Trauma and Mental Health on Graduate Student Retention and Academic Success

This project addresses student retention and success of underrepresented students. It examines the efficacy of current resources, education, and training available for addressing the effects of sexual assault, violence, and posttraumatic stress on graduate student mental health. I employ a combination of ethnographic research methods, participant observation, interviews, and content analysis, and techniques such as snow-balling and generative survey responses in order to reach particularly marginalized students. My expected outcomes include increased graduate retention and improved campus climate in regards to diversity and mental health, which, in turn, will encourage the growth of diverse student populations on our campus.

Leader-Follower UAVs for Formation Testing

Many aerial missions consist of various different tasks.Compared to a single manned aerial vehicle, UnmannedAerial Vehicle (UAV) has a greater operational capability.Furthermore, multi-vehicle systems have the abilityto share tasks and therefor accomplish the mission objectiveswith greater efficiency. The UAVs relay real-time informationbetween each other through a Ground ControlStation (GCS), this configuration is known as a centralizedsystem. Single point failures can cause a centralizedsystem to be non-functional[1]. Alternatively, the UAVscan transmit real-time information between group members,in this configuration the system operates in a decentralizedscheme. Understanding those different strategiesand major difficulties for formation flight testing we adopta Multi-UAVs system design with three components: a’Leader’ UAV, a ’Follower’ UAV and a GCS.

Motivation Matters: Development of a Short Form Measure of Solitude for Adolescents and Emerging Adults

Solitude affords adolescents and emerging adults opportunities for mood regulation (Larson, Csikszentmihalyi, & Graef, 1982), identity development (Larson, 1997), and self-reflection (Long & Averill, 2003) as they navigate the task of individuation (Grotevant & Cooper, 1998). The purpose of this study was to develop a short form of the Motivation for Solitude Scale (MSS) (Nicol, 2005); Nicol’s scale draws on Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2002) and distinguishes between self-determined solitude (SDS) (i.e., moving toward the self for creative or reflective purposes) and not-self-determined solitude (NSDS) (i.e., withdrawing from people because of rejection or anxiety). The MSS represents an improvement over the widely used Preference for Solitude Scale (PSS) (Burger, 1995) because the PSS does not differentiate between positive and negative reasons for preferring solitude. Mental health outcomes, such as loneliness, correlated with the PSS may depend...
