Improving Student Sensory Experiences in the University Library

In 2026, staff at the UC Santa Cruz University Library conducted a project aimed to understand and improve student sensory experiences in library spaces. We recruited 11 undergraduate students to engage in co-design sessions wherein students discussed sensory-related experiences in the library and ideated potential changes that would improve those experiences. These recommended changes were in the areas of communication, facilities, policies, the room booking website, and the equipment and supplies at the library.

This report includes a review of the literature on the impact sensory sensitivities have on undergraduate experiences and an overview on how academic libraries are addressing sensory sensitivities. It also details the methodology researchers used to conduct co-design sessions with students and the changes recommended by the student participants.

It provides recognition, support, and validation for individuals and organizations performing accessioning labor, and encourages more efficient and effective accessioning work throughout the archival profession. This workshop will provide a brief overview of the best practices and introduce attendees to a helpful auditing tool to assess their organization’s accessioning workflows. Questions are encouraged and attendees will leave with resources to keep them connected to the tools and colleagues they have been introduced to in this workshop.

A report of findings from a research project on backlogs and processing practices in UC Libraries, presented at the 2024 Annual General Meeting of the Society of California Archivists. The Guidelines for Efficient Archival Processing in the University of California Libraries has been an influential resource for archivists nationwide since its publication in 2012. This research project seeks to understand the Guidelines' impact on backlogs, collection management policies, and day-to-day archival practices over the last dozen years across the UC Libraries, by taking a fresh look at current practices, collections, and perspectives. Our research will assess how the Guidelines' strategies for managing materials, accessioning, and processing have or have not been effective. A forthcoming article in the Journal of Western Archives summarizes our findings.

The Impact of Prebiotic, Probiotic, and Synbiotic Supplements and Yogurt Consumption on the Risk of Colorectal Neoplasia among Adults: A Systematic Review

Prebiotic and probiotic supplementation and yogurt consumption (a probiotic food) alter gut microbial diversity, which may influence colorectal carcinogenesis. This systematic review evaluates the existing literature on the effect of these nutritional supplements and yogurt consumption on colorectal neoplasia incidence among adults. We systematically identified ten randomized controlled trials and observational studies in adults age ≥ 18 without baseline gastrointestinal disease. Prebiotics included inulin, fructooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides, xylooligosaccharides, isomaltooligosaccharides, and β-glucans. Probiotics included bacterial strains of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Bacillus, Pediococcus, Leuconostoc, and Escherichia coli. Shaping the Future of Library Support for Graduate Student Authors: Addressing Gaps in Publishing

Graduate students report many barriers and challenges to publishing in an increasingly competitive environment. They also face a hidden curriculum around publishing practices, which can disproportionately disadvantage first generation students. In this paper, we present preliminary results from a subset of our one-on-one, peer-to-peer interviews with graduate students representing disciplines across campus. We conducted applied thematic analysis by coding interview transcripts and identifying major themes. We will share what we have learned focusing on what topics libraries can teach that will best guide students in their publishing efforts.

Making the publishing process more transparent: Identifying a baseline for publishing support through researching gaps between graduate students and their faculty advisors’ support

This poster will share the preliminary findings from a mixed-methods research study on graduate students’ knowledge of and faculty support of the publishing process at an R1 university.

The publishing process is arduous and opaque, and graduate students as early career researchers lack a clear, consistent introduction to the process (Belcher, 2009). Graduate students learn as they go, encounter unspoken disciplinary and/or cultural rules that cause confusion, and ask questions like, “how long does it take to get published?”, “what is open access?”, and “how soon should I pick a journal?”. Support from faculty is inconsistent, and faculty have limited time (O’Hara et al., 2019). Also, publishing norms vary across disciplines, but cross-disciplinary training about publishing in general can be valuable (Colla, 2020; O’Hara et al., 2019). Basic MarcEdit Skills for Searching, Cleaning & Enhancing Your MARC Data

One of the basic tools for technical services is skills with MarcEdit. This free utility provides the ability to batch analyze, edit, and enrich MARC records. The Metadata Services Department at the UC Santa Cruz University Library has used MarcEdit to find records lacking an OCLC number, sort and separate records by format, prepend URLs with proxy information, remove unwanted vendor data, add local fields, and detect duplicate fields. This presentation made at the New England Technical Services Librarians 2019 Annual Spring Conference demonstrates, through examples, how to accomplish these tasks. In addition to analyzing and editing records, this presentation covers the creation of MARC records from spreadsheet data and the enhancement of records with RDA elements and URIs.

In 2012, a group of librarians published the “Guidelines for Efficient Archival Processing in the University of California Libraries,” which served as a touchstone for archival staff both within the University of California and beyond in their bid to tackle significant backlogs. Over time language and linked references in the document became outdated; and the recommendations began to feel out of touch with emerging discussions of holistic collection management. This shift in the profession, coupled with the increasing prevalence of born-digital collection materials led a group of UC archivists in 2018 to embark on a two-year-long revision project to make key changes addressing the impact that appraisal, accessioning, and over-collecting have on the existence and growth of backlogs. The Elisabeth Remak-Honnef Center for Archival Research and Training (CART) at UC Santa Cruz supports the professional development and research success of graduate students by providing training in archival processing techniques in its paid fellowship program. One beneficial outcome of this fellowship that is frequently expressed by graduate students is their increased familiarity working with archival materials as a researcher, in addition to the practical experience working in an academic library.

Over the last year, we have expanded CART beyond the competitive fellowship into a new community called CART Commons, which is broadly geared towards all graduate students who are embarking on or already immersed in archival research. As a small university library, our research support efforts are focused on Early Career Researchers (ECRs) including graduate students. Many of our campus Electronic Theses & Dissertations (ETDs) have supplemental files which we examined to determine what support our graduate students need. A majority of the files had significant preservation and usability issues, and basic data best practices were not being followed. Based upon this review, we created an ETD supplemental file guide, and partnered with the Graduate Division to communicate this guide to students. In this poster, we will share our supplemental file discoveries, our approach, and resources.

No library relishes the thought of a system migration. Preparations can take as long as time allows. Imagine the surprise and anxiety of the UCSC implementation team when we discovered that we would be going live with our new Alma environment 40 days sooner than our timeline had assumed. This presentation will detail how UCSC made quick and pragmatic decisions about what services and integrations were deemed necessary for go-live and what was saved for the other end. Though no one hopes for an accelerated timeline for go-live, our experience would be of interest to libraries planning migrations, as well as those libraries already in Alma, since many of our configurations and integrations have, by necessity, been implemented in our production environment. Following the BIBFLOW Roadmap: First Steps toward a Linked Data Environment

UC Santa Cruz Library recently enhanced bibliographic data with identifiers to facilitate the eventual reuse of MARC data as Linked Data. The project was a result of Associate University Librarian Kerry Scott’s desire to position the library system for a linked data environment. Uniform Resource Identifiers, or URIs, were a topic of great discussion in the library community in 2018. The consensus was that the first step in preparation for Linked Data was moving from “strings” of bibliographic data to “things,” machine-actionable identifiers that uniquely identify things on the Semantic Web. Based on recommendations from the Program for Cooperative Cataloging Task Group on URIs in MARC and the BIBFLOW roadmap report produced by UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz Library added URIs to controlled access points in local MARC records as the first step toward a Linked Data bibliographic environment.

This article outlines the creation of computer game platform and media format Linked Open Data (LOD) controlled vocabularies by the Game Metadata and Citation Project (GAMECIP). We discuss the need for more consistent and accurate information in computer game library records, define what we mean by “platform” and “media format,” and then elaborate on our research process and issues encountered along the way. Our vocabularies were constructed with the Simple Knowledge Organization System to take advantage of its properties and hierarchical structure. After describing our LOD schema in detail, we conclude with a discussion of future work and a call for more collaboration.

This poster describes a project to arrange, describe, and preserve two archival collections at UC Santa Cruz Special Collections & Archives: the Lick Observatory Records and the papers of Kenneth S. Norris. Both collections include essential records that highlight an innovative way of exploring nature at the time: the Lick Observatory embarked on expeditions all over the world in the early 20th century to study total solar eclipses, and Ken Norris helped establish the Field Quarter class at UC Santa Cruz, which remains to this day a unique opportunity for students to explore and study natural reserves across California for an entire academic quarter.
