The high mobility group (HMG) proteins are the most abundant non-histone chromosomal proteins within the nucleus. As architectural proteins, they are thought to play a large role in chromatin dynamics by interacting with the linker histone H1 at the nucleosome. The potential interplay among these proteins have been suggested by both biochemical studies and in vivo studies. Using a purified biochemical system, HMGB2 appears to be displaced at the nucleosome by H1.0, an H1 variant, and HMGN2 and H1.0 can both bind at the nucleosome simultaneously.
