Drosophila suzukii, or spotted-wing drosophila, is now an established pest in many parts of the world, causing significant damage to numerous fruit crop industries. Native to East Asia, D. suzukii infestations started in the United States a decade ago, occupying a wide range of climates. To better understand invasion ecology of this pest, knowledge of past migration events, population structure, and genetic diversity is needed. In this study, we sequenced whole genomes of 237 individual flies collected across the continental United States, as well as several sites in Europe, Brazil, and Asia, to identify and analyze hundreds of thousands of genetic markers. We observed strong population structure between Western and Eastern US populations, but no evidence of any population structure between different latitudes within the continental United States, suggesting that there are no broad-scale adaptations occurring in response to differences in winter climates. We detect admixture from Hawaii to the Western United States and from the Eastern United States to Europe, in agreement with previously identified introduction routes inferred from microsatellite analysis. We also detect potential signals of admixture from the Western United States back to Asia, which could have important implications for shipping and quarantine policies for exported agriculture. We anticipate this large genomic dataset will spur future research into the genomic adaptations underlying D. suzukii pest activity and development of novel control methods for this agricultural pest.

Ameasurement is presented of the φ×BR(φ → K⁺K⁻) production cross section at √s = 7 TeV using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 383 μb^-1, collected with theATLAS experiment at the LHC. Selection of φ(1020) mesons is based on the identification of charged kaons by their energy loss in the pixel detector. The differential cross section ismeasured as a function of the transverse momentum, pT,φ , and rapidity, yφ, of the φ(1020) meson in the fiducial region 500< pT,φ <1200MeV, |yφ| < 0.8, kaon pT,K > 230 MeV and kaon momentum pK < 800 MeV. The integrated φ(1020)-meson production cross section in this fiducial range is measured to be σφ×BR(φ → K⁺K⁻) = 570 ± 8 (stat) ± 66 (syst) ± 20 (lumi) μb.

Measurements of normalized differential cross sections for top-quark pair production are presented as a function of the top-quark transverse momentum, and of the mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity of the tt¯ system, in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=7TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6fb-1, recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in the lepton+jets channel, requiring exactly one lepton and at least four jets with at least one of the jets tagged as originating from a b-quark. The measured spectra are corrected for detector efficiency and resolution effects and are compared to several Monte Carlo simulations and theory calculations. The results are in fair agreement with the predictions in a wide kinematic range. Nevertheless, data distributions are softer than predicted for higher values of the mass of the tt¯ system and of the top-quark transverse momentum. The measurements can also discriminate among different sets of parton distribution functions.

An improved measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson is derived from a combined fit to the reconstructed invariant mass spectra of the decay channels H→γγ and H→ZZ∗→4. The analysis uses the pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25fb-1. The measured value of the Higgs boson mass is mH=125.36±0.37(stat)±0.18(syst)GeV. This result is based on improved energy-scale calibrations for photons, electrons, and muons as well as other analysis improvements, and supersedes the previous result from ATLAS. Upper limits on the total width of the Higgs boson are derived from fits to the invariant mass spectra of the H→γγ and H→ZZ∗→4 decay channels.

Simultaneous measurements of the tt¯, W+W-, and Z/γ∗→ττ production cross-sections using an integrated luminosity of 4.6fb-1 of pp collisions at s=7TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Events are selected with two high transverse momentum leptons consisting of an oppositely charged electron and muon pair. The three processes are separated using the distributions of the missing transverse momentum of events with zero and greater than zero jet multiplicities. Measurements of the fiducial cross-section are presented along with results that quantify for the first time the underlying correlations in the predicted and measured cross-sections due to proton parton distribution functions. These results indicate that the correlated next-to-leading-order predictions for tt¯ and Z/γ∗→ττ underestimate the data, while those at next-to-next-to-leading-order generally describe the data well. The full cross-sections are measured to be σ(tt¯)=181.2±2.8-9.5+9.7±3.3±3.3pb, σ(W+W-)=53.3±2.7-8.0+7.3±1.0±0.5pb, and σ(Z/γ∗→ττ)=1174±24-87+72±21±9pb, where the cited uncertainties are due to statistics, systematic effects, luminosity and the LHC beam energy measurement, respectively. The W+W- measurement includes the small contribution from Higgs boson decays, H→W+W-.

© 2013 CERN The dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb−1. Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet bin-averaged cross sections are presented as functions of photon transverse energy, jet transverse momentum and jet rapidity. In addition, the bin-averaged cross sections as functions of the difference between the azimuthal angles of the photon and the jet, the photon–jet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photon–jet centre-of-mass frame have been measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are compared to the measurements and provide a good description of the data, except for the case of the azimuthal opening angle.

A combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC using datasets corresponding to integrated luminosities from 1.04 fb-1 to 4.9 fb-1 of pp collisions collected at s=7TeV is presented. The Higgs boson mass ranges 112.9-115.5 GeV, 131-238 GeV and 251-466 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level (CL), while the range 124-519 GeV is expected to be excluded in the absence of a signal. An excess of events is observed around mH~126GeV with a local significance of 3.5 standard deviations (σ). The local significances of H→γγ, H→ZZ(z.ast;)→ℓ+ℓ-ℓ'+ℓ'- and H→WW(z.ast;)→ℓ+νℓ'-ν- the three most sensitive channels in this mass range, are 2.8σ, 2.1σ and 1.4σ, respectively. The global probability for the background to produce such a fluctuation anywhere in the explored Higgs boson mass range 110-600 GeV is estimated to be ~1.4% or, equivalently, 2.2σ. © 2012 CERN.

A search for a Standard Model Higgs boson decaying via H→ZZ→ℓ+ℓ-νν-, where ℓ represents electrons or muons, is presented. It is based on proton-proton collision data at s=7TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7fb -1 . The data agree with the expected Standard Model backgrounds. Upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section are derived for Higgs boson masses between 200 GeV and 600 GeV and the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass in the range 319-558 GeV is excluded at the 95% confidence level. © 2012 CERN.

A search is presented for production of a heavy up-type quark (t ' ) together with its antiparticle, assuming a significant branching ratio for subsequent decay into a W boson and a b quark. The search is based on 4.7 fb -1 of pp collisions at s=7TeV recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data are analyzed in the lepton+jets final state, characterized by a high-transverse-momentum isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum and at least three jets. The analysis strategy relies on the substantial boost of the W bosons in the t't¯' signal when mt'?400GeV. No significant excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed and the result of the search is interpreted in the context of fourth-generation and vector-like quark models. Under the assumption of a branching ratio BR(t ' ?Wb)=1, a fourth-generation t ' quark with mass lower than 656GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level. In addition, in light of the recent discovery of a new boson of mass ~126GeV at the LHC, upper limits are derived in the two-dimensional plane of BR(t ' ?Wb) versus BR(t ' ?Ht), where H is the Standard Model Higgs boson, for vector-like quarks of various masses. © 2012 CERN.
