NCGIA Closing Reports on Research Initiatives and Projects (1992)
NCGIA Research Initiative 5 explored the Architecture of Very Large GIS Databases. This report covers research activities in this area over the period July 1989–August 1992. Central attention is given to problems relating to the storage, access, processing, and analysis of spatially indexed data processing. This report highlights how such datasets require radically new approaches to spatial data models, spatial data structures, algorithms, and user inter-faces.

    On July 19-22, the National Center for Geographical Information and Analysis held the specialist Meeting of the Research Initiative on Very Large Spatial Databases (VLSDB) at Santa Barbara, CA. At this workshop, 42 participants from the U.S. and Europe discussed research issues related to the design of database management systems for geographic information systems and identified a long-term research agenda germane to the development of the next generation of geographic information systems. This paper summarizes the discussions that took place.

      A stochastic theory of fluvial landsurfaces is developed for transport-limited erosion, using well-established models for the water and sediment fluxes. The mathematical models and analysis is developed showing that landsurface evolution is described by Markovian stochastic processes. The landsurfaces are described by non-deterministic stochastic processes, characterized by a statistical quantity, the variogram, that exibits characteristic scalings. Thus the landsurfaces are shown to be SOC (Self-organized-critical) systems, or systems of color, possessing both an initial transient state and a stationary state. The theory reproduces established numerical results and measurements from DEMs (digital elevation models).
