PurposeNew (post‐1949) Chinese local gazetteers are one of the major primary resources for contemporary China Studies in the field of history, social sciences, humanities and sciences. Major research libraries in North America have collected them; however, the research value of this series of publications has not yet fully explored. This paper aims at examining how new local gazetteers have been compiled, the scope of their content and research value, and how scholars have used them.Design/methodology/approachThe paper explores the scope and importance of the new Chinese local gazetteers collection through reviewing relevant regulations, policies and guidelines regarding compilation of the new local gazetteers, and randomly examining over 30 provincial, city and county gazetteers.FindingsThe paper provides a detailed account of publishing history of this collection; rich and unique research information available; and approaches to collection development, including utilizing digitized gazetteers by Chinese governments.Originality/valueThe paper explores the development of new Chinese local gazetteers in a more systematic way and adds to the current literature on the unique research value this collection has to offer.

      To tackle issues related to metadata and improve discovery of and access to digital resources, National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has developed a series of standards and recommended best practices. The impact of these standards has been discussed in depth. However, no research has been done in the areas of how those standards and best practices can be used for digital resources in Chinese, and strategies for implementing those standards. This paper aims to identify common issues in discovery of and access to Chinese digital resources; suggest feasible solutions; discuss how to leverage NISO standards and recommended practices; and recommend ways to promote the standards and best practices to stakeholders.

        This bilingual dictionary is developed through a crowd-translation project that was funded by CEAL-Mellon. This is the first edition. The project team would encourage scholars to use it and to send us revision suggestions, if any. We will update the dictionary based upon your suggestions. Note that this version comes with a navigation menu. However, to be able to see and use the menu, one has to download the PDF file and open it up in Adobe.

          The presentation discussed the current and potential issues we faced with electronic resources, especially Chinese e-resources like ebooks from Apabi, which filed bankruptcy (and we've bought a lot of books there!), and databases from CNKI, which are suspended until further notice due to government audits. Brings up a lot of questions on how to handle these situations from perpetual access rights in licensing terms to safeguard plans for preservation and activating perpetual access.

            The Languages of Berkeley: An Online Exhibition celebrates the magnificent diversity of languages that advance research, teaching, and learning at the University of California, Berkeley. It is the point of embarkation for an exciting sequential exhibit that built on one post per week, showcasing an array of digitized works in the original language chosen by those who work with these languages on a daily basis. Many of these early-published works are now in the public domain and are open to the world to read and share without restriction. 

            Preparations for the online exhibition began in early 2018 with the final installment published online in October 2020. Using the Library’s instance of WordPress, the library exhibit comprises short essays of nearly all of the 59 modern and ancient languages that are currently taught across 14 departments on campus plus a dozen more languages that contributors wished to include. From September 2019 to August 2020, exhibit designer Aisha Hamilton and curator Claude Potts also installed a physical companion exhibition in Moffitt Library’s Free Speech Movement Café (FSM) centering on endangered languages which was cut short by the campus closure due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Photos from that installation are archived in this catalog with the open book publishing platform Pressbooks, along with the complete entries from the online exhibition. 

            Aside from core support from the Library and the Berkeley Language Center, this multi-year project would not have been possible without the contributions and hard work of more than 45 librarians, professors, lecturers, staff, and students.
