Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming ever more pervasive in people's daily lives through the increased use of virtual assistants, personalized recommendations, conversational agents, and more. Given the increasing prevalence of AI in highly impactful fields such as medicine, care work, education, etc., there was a clear need to understand the current perceptions that older adults held regarding AI. As such, I conducted a focus group study where I asked a group of 6 older adults from a local senior living community about their general feelings, perceived benefits, and potential concerns regarding AI. Based on these findings, I developed an informational website about AI that expanded on some potential issues related to the trust and safety of AI. The goal of the website was to provide the older adults with information about AI in a way that honors their current understanding of AI, while offering some practical tips on getting started with AI.
