Phase imaging and the evolution of a gold-vacuum interface at atomic resolution
Abstract
We observe, using phase maps obtained from a focal series of images, the evolution in time of agold-vacuum interface. What is seen is the reconfiguration and removal of whole columns of goldatoms (typically containing three to nine atoms) at the interface. These structural changes arediscussed with reference to the variation in binding energy along the interface.
