Creation of Two-Week Selective in Interventional Radiology

Abstract

Interventional Radiology (IR) is a relatively young medical specialty that is growing exponentially in its role in patient care. As such, it is undergoing major innovation in its training pathway. The ACGME has recently approved a new IR residency program recruiting students from medical school, rather than as graduating radiology residents seeking an IR fellowship. Though UC San Diego is regarded for having an outstanding IR department, it previously lacked a formal rotation for third year medical students. With the development of the new residency, it is crucial to expose students to IR earlier on to help seed awareness and develop passion for the specialty. The purpose of this Independent Study Project is to create a two-week selective in IR and develop curriculum to maximize the clinical learning experience for both rotating students and IR faculty.
