Abstract

The poems that follow draw heavily on natural imagery and fantastical subjects, probing into questions of possibility and impossibility, tradition and transgression, and pattern and break. They find inspiration in both obeying and subverting traditional received forms, as well as in alluding to stories drawn from religion, folklore, and mythology, often deliberately feminizing the narratives they repurpose; telling and retelling is a major concern, as is the truth, and who decides it. The themes they deal with include questions of the past and the trouble with it; of contingency, both geographical and temporal; and of the difference between knowing something and believing it. They are mostly love poems.
