Improvisations I - III

Abstract

These works, Improvisations I - III, by composer Peter Vukmirovic Stevens and Constantin Rusu, are a music and visual art synthesis with two primary goals.First, to create a combined musical and visual art experience for audiences. This work seeks to make a performable connection between time-based and non-time-based art.And two, to create works that allow a continuous collaboration between the composer, the visual artist, and the interpreter.Stevens composed three short works for piano, leaving an open section for improvisation. The works begin with a fixed-note musical exposition that stops with a half-cadence feeling. This leads to a transition from fixed-note notation to the improvised section, passing the baton to the interpreter to develop the work as they see fit.The graphic notation section offers a structure for improvisation. The improviser may play the graphic section for any duration of time. The performer may incorporate some of the fixed-note material into the improvisation. The lines moving from left to right suggest textures of intervallic range, sequences, expression, and tempo.Once the performer feels they have expressed their ideas within the improvised section, they lead back into a new fixed note section or sections.
