Essays on Public Spending and Taxation in Developing Countries

Abstract

This dissertation examines public spending and taxation programs in developing countries. The first chapter examines the effect of federal transfers on local revenue collection in the Philippines. The second chapter examines the relationship between private investment, taxation, and insurgent related violence in the Philippines. The third chapter analyzes which types of public development spending are most effective at reducing insurgent violence in Iraq
