Mosaics for the Masses: Using 3D Reef Modeling Technology to Empower Communities in Micronesia

Abstract

Conservation technology, like creating 3D models of coral reefs, have the promise of utilizing the advancements in computing to assist with the conservation and management of natural resources. Bringing these technologies from an academic setting like The Scripps Institution of Oceanography to island nations like Micronesia is an opportunity to expand the scientific capacity of organizations with limited resources. This report recommends the numerous benefits of 3D models to island communities recognizing that many of the secondary benefits will be important for the successful transfer and integration of the technology.
