The Impact on the New Mexico Budget of Offering Domestic Partnerships to Same-Sex Couples

Abstract

This analysis presented before the Finance Committee of the New Mexico Senate estimates the impact on New Mexico’s state budget of allowing same-sex couples to register as domestic partners.  Using the best data available and following the methodology of some of our previous reports in this area, we estimate that allowing same-sex couples to enter registered domestic partnerships will result in savings of approximately $74,000 to $569,000 annually in state expenditures on means-tested public benefit program, some increase in state sales tax revenues, and benefits to private businesses and the state economy as a whole.
