Using a generalized form of the logistic equation, dN dt=rN[1-( N K)θ], where θ permits the inflection point of the growth curve to vary between K e and K, it is shown that, under certain conditions, there are evolutionary optima for the value of θ. All other things equal, a high value of θ is favored. If there is a maximum on the absolute growth rate, the optimal value of θ is high in a stable environment and low in an unstable environment. © 1976.
