A bioinformatic analysis of the Alp8 family

The majority of bacterial actins reside on mobile genetic elements. As of yet, the only known function of any of these genes is plasmid partitioning, and it has been assumed that all plasmid borne actins participate in this process. In this project, I conduct a bioinformatic analysis of one such actin family--the Alp8 family--and suggest an entirely new function. Based on an analysis of their genetic context and their conserved conjugative apparatuses with which they appear to have evolved in parallel, I suggest that the Alp8 family may play a novel role in conjugation
