The Divisions of the Pope: The Catholic Revival and Europe's Transition to Democracy
Abstract
The ultramontane church of the 19th century – authoritarian, hierarchical, and centralized – was also, in some (but not all) European societies, a contributer to democratization and to the effectiveness of democratic institutions. This apparent paradox is explored with the help of some of the arguments made by political scientists on the "transition to democracy"
