The Merchant of Venice Vindicated
Abstract
This note challenges two negative assumptions about The Merchant of Venice: that it is anti-Semitic, and that historic Venice was equally so. In fact Shakespeare demonstrates the limitations of both Antonio's emotional extravagance and Shylock's puritanism. The reason Jews fled to Venice from Spain was that it accepted them as residents (unlike England).
