The aridity coefficient and its application to California

Abstract

An aridity coefficient represents a combined effect of temperature range as a measure of continentality and a precipitation ratio as an adequate expression of rainfall variability. The Mojave and Colorado Deserts represent the driest area in North America; Bagdad, California has 79% aridity coefficient, Yuma 42%, Phoenix 28%, and Tucson 22%, as compared with the middle of the Sahara approaching 100%.
