We study the structure and rigidity properties of von Neumann algebras. We provide several applications of Shlyakhtenko's operator-valued semicircular construction, including some characterization of property (T) and Haagerup’s approximation property, and the structure of bimodules of existentially closed II$_1$ factors. We also discuss existentially closed inclusions for non-Gamma II$_1$ factors.
