Electronic Publication

Subscriptions are free. Copyrights are retained by authors. By submitting a paper to Cliodynamics authors grant a license to publish the paper in electronic form, and at our option in printed or other forms. Once accepted and published, authors also grant a license to any user of this journal to download and print the paper, and to cite from it subject to normal standards for reasonable scientific use. Publications are not subject to correction except through errata. Proofreading and copy editing are the responsibilities of the authors.

Peer Review and Publication

All papers submitted to Cliodynamics  are peer reviewed, considering their contribution to topics, methods, and issues pertaining to quantitative history and cultural evolution. Editors make an initial assessment of all manuscripts submitted to the journal.  Manuscripts that do not follow the submission guidelines and instructions, lack quality in presentation and original research, or are otherwise inappropriate will be returned to the author(s) without additional review. Manuscripts approved by the Editors will be sent to one or more scholars familiar with the area of research for review. The Senior Editor may solicit suggestions for peer reviewers from the author(s). Additionally, the Editorial Board may also make recommendations for reviewers. Reviews are expected to be returned in 30 days.

Editors will review the reviewers' reports  and at that time determine whether the manuscript should be: (1) rejected and returned to the author(s); (2) accepted with minor revision; (3) accepted with major revisions; or (4) revised and resubmitted for further review. The Editors and/or Editorial Board may provide suggestions as to how a rejected manuscript might be improved for subsequent consideration. 

Articles returned to the author(s) for revision should be resubmitted in a timely manner, to be determined by the author(s) and Editors on a case-by-case basis. Revised manuscripts will be reviewed by the Editors, who may reach out to reviewers for a further review, including some or all of the original reviewers and/or new reviewers, on the determination of the Editors.

Our contacts with reviewers operate by a speedy and automated process, and we encourage reviewers to return their reviews within one month. Reviewers have an option for anonymous e-mail exchanges with authors. They are also permitted to reveal their identities if they wish. Accepted manuscripts are published in a subsequent Issue of the Journal and/or as preprints at the discretion of the Editors, after consultation and agreement from the author(s).

Publication in refereed electronic journals should count equally to paper media in academic review for merits and promotions. Once an article is published, authors receive counts of downloads that are important evidence of the impact and readership of the article.
