Neopopulist Solutions to Neoliberal Problems: Mexico's National Solidarity Problem

No data is associated with this publication.
Abstract

This issue brief is an exploration of the political aspects of PRONASOL. However, PRONASOL – the Mexican government’s National Solidarity Program aimed at developing health, education, nutrition, housing, employment, infrastructure, and other productive projects to benefit the seventeen million Mexicans living in extreme poverty - is an ongoing program; it continues to evolve and grow. As a result, many of its long-term consequences are still unclear. PRONASOL has awakened great expectations about improved living standards, popular involvement in decision making, and a truly participatory form of development. Whether or not PRONASOL will live up to those expectations and how it will influence the country’s political scenario remain questions for the future.
