Abstract Aim: To explore foreign nurses’ experiences related to the provision of geriatric care in NH settings. Methods: Focus groups in four California nursing homes. Results: Seven focus groups with a total of 27 international nurses (RNs and LVNs) were conducted. Findings included that nurses were not trained in their “home” country in geriatric care. Rather, much of their training was related to informal caring for an aged loved one. While turnover among nurses was high, those who were employed in the facility greater than 1 year, they said they were surprised by the job satisfaction and creating relationships with the residents and intended to stay.
