A combined experimental/analytical investigation is being conducted to study the interaction of particles and turbulent fluid flowfields under a wide range of test conditions. As a first step, the developing region of an unconfined axisymmetric turbulent jet with and without glass beads of 105 μm diam (d) has been addressed for two mass loading ratios, LR = 0.2 and 1.0. A well-defined data set suitable for the validation of two-phase flow models was obtained by using a two-component phase Doppler technique. The theoretical calculations, based on a stochastic Lagrangian treatment along with a two-equation turbulence model for two-phase flows, yield reasonable and encouraging agreement with the measurements. © 1989 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc., All rights reserved.
