Who Can Submit

The Department of Anthropology, History & Social Medicine publishes research and discussion papers by faculty, graduate students and visiting scholars to UCSF. Often these are presented in seminars and reflect the range of activities in medical anthropology, history of health sciences, medical science and technology studies and cultural studies that are pursued in the Department. How to Submit a Paper

1. Make sure your paper is in an acceptable format. We can accept papers in Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format (RTF). We do not accept PDF since the paper will be reformatted to style specifications (see below) and then converted to PDF for publishing.
2. Write an abstract for your paper of between 250-500 words in length. Please also select three to five keywords. These are words that will help a user locate your paper through a search.
3. Submit the paper by emailing it to Professor Brian Dolan at dolanb@dahsm.ucsf.edu. Include in an email message the following things: abstract; keywords; and name, affiliation (department and university), and email address for each author.

Overview of the Process

After you submit your paper, we will convert it to "house-style" specifications (see below) and then create an Adobe Acrobat (PDF) version of it and publish it on the site. You will be sent a "proof" of your paper for any final revisions and you must register your acceptance of the final version before it can be published. Once it is posted, you will be notified of the URL and the full citation reference.

House Style

For consistency in presentation in the DAHSM Paper series, we request that all submissions be formatted in the following style:

• Page layout: landscape
• Margins: 1" all around
• Font: Times New Roman, size 11 point
• Spacing: single
• Two columns for the document
• Justify margins
• Indent new paragraphs
• Use italics rather than underline for titles, emphasis, etc.

If submissions are not already in this house style, the editors will reformat the paper for you.

Other than providing an overview reading to ensure completeness, no editorial work is done for grammar or scholarly consistency. While DAHSM faculty approve or reject contributions for its Scholarly Paper series, each author is responsible for the integrity and quality of the piece, to which they retain copyright.
