In this article I present a reading of Robert Musil's novel The Man without Qualities from an ethical perspective, examining the work as an important contribution to philosophical ethics.

The calendar story is a genre that is largely ignored by literary criticism. The history of the genre indicates a progressive emancipation from its medium, i.e. its printing on calendars. Bertolt Brecht, for instance, published a collection of stories entitled “Kalendergeschichten” with no reference to a calendar, so that there are “Kalendergeschichten” without calendars. This paper traces the history of the genre with regard to the disappearance of the medium, the calendar, and provides an extensive reading with regard to dates, times, politics, and historical events in: Brecht’s “Cäsar und sein Legionär.” It argues that in this ‘new’ calendar story, the calendar not only plays a central role within the narrative, but is indeed being narrated. The calendar is no longer the medium, but moves ‘inside’ the story and defines it from within.

The implicit dialogue between the Heiner Müller’s dramatic works and Julia Kristeva’s theory of the abject has been largely neglected in scholarship. This article suggests not only that Kristeva’s theory of the abject informs a reading of Müller’s 1988 drama, Quartett, but also that Müller’s drama adds to Kristeva’s theory by linking the synchronic abjection pertaining to the body and subject relations with what I term “diachronic abjection,” a mode of abjection pertaining to historical placement. In Müller’s enigmatic work, violent sexuality, physical decay, and excrement are related not only to mortality and self-definition, but also to the individual’s ability to exist in the present without forgetting the past. While Kristeva only briefly considers how the abject relates to historicity, Müller makes this central to his work, which carries political implications considering his dramas’ role in critiquing the relations between memory and revolution, as well as GDR memory politics.

Der vorliegende Aufsatz macht es sich zur Aufgabe, Grenzüberschreitungen in der Erzählung Bergkristall von Adalbert Stifter und im Kapitel „Schnee“ des Romans Der Zauberberg von Thomas Mann zu untersuchen. Hinzugezogen wird des Weiteren Stifters – auch autobiographisch zu lesender – Text Aus dem bayrischen Walde, da dieser Aspekte thematisiert, welche für die Interpretation der fiktionalen Texte relevant sind. Als theoretische Grundlage der Untersuchung dienen Jurij Lotmans Überlegungen zum räumlichen Element der Grenze, die sich in seiner Monographie Die Struktur des künstlerischen Textes finden. Ausgewählte, im inhaltlichen Kontext für wichtig befundene Thesen sollen im Folgenden besprochen werden.

Der Romancier, Essayist und Reiseschriftsteller Wolfgang Koeppen wurde 1974 für ein Jahr zum ersten symbolischen Stadtschreiber der bei Frankfurt gelegenen Kleinstadt Bergen-Enkheim erkoren. Es war der erste Literaturpreis dieser Art in der Bundesrepublik, der auf einen in der literarischen Peergroup hoch angesehenen, der breiteren Öffentlichkeit jedoch weithin unbekannten Autor fiel. Die Preisvergabe an den von Vorschüssen mehr schlecht als recht lebenden Koeppen hatte einen mäzenatischen Anstrich. Im Gegenzug sollte sein prestigeträchtiger Name dem Stadtschreiberpreis Glanz verleihen. Fernerhin wurden vom Stadtschreiber Besuche in Bergen-Enkheim und der Austausch mit der Bevölkerung erwartet. Dabei war Koeppen ein Autor, der von sich das Bild eines öffentlichkeitsscheuen Einzelgängers und provinzverachtenden Großstädters entworfen hatte. Bei dieser Konstellation waren Konflikte die natürliche Folge. In der Tradition Eulenspiegels definierte Koeppen für sich die Rolle des Stadtschreibers als Stadtnarren, indem er schnell das Weite suchte und erst Monate später nach Bergen-Enkheim zurückkehrte, um in sein symbolisches Amt hineinzuwachsen.
