Abstract
For millions of years, plants and animals have adapted to environmental changes. However, such changes are happening much faster than most species can adjust. As a result, many vulnerable species risk extinction without human help, while others are more resilient and can adapt quickly. These changes alter which species live together and how ecosystems function, affecting important services such as forest regeneration. Understanding these changes is essential to protect biodiversity and keep ecosystems healthy. My dissertation examines how small-bodied mammals respond to environmental disturbances and how these responses affect their interactions with other species. The goals are to (1) review the ecological roles of small-bodied mammals in maintaining tropical forest structure and regeneration; (2) assess how naturaland human-driven disturbances affect these mammals; (3) evaluate how population and individual body sizes influence seed dispersal provided by small mammals; and (4) simulate how the loss of seed dispersers impacts forest integrity and ecosystem services. To address these questions, we captured, measured, and released small mammals within and around Ranomafana National Park, southeastern Madagascar, from 2021 to 2024 using passive live traps. We collected the content of their fecal samples to quantify their seed dispersal and set the seeds for germination to assess the quality of their seed dispersal. Chapter (1) showed that small-bodied and nocturnal lemurs are effective seed dispersers in Madagascar’s forest ecosystems. They disperse small- and medium-seeded plants, transport them away from parent plants, enhance seed germination and seedling growth, and assist the regeneration of plant communities in disturbed habitats. Chapter (2) demonstrated that forest degradation and recurrent cyclones can act in synergy and alter the structure of a small mammal community. Diversity, population and body sizes all significantly decreased immediately after the cyclones and bounced back 4-5 months later, with a better recovery in less degraded forest habitats. Additionally, each species responded to disturbances differently, with a remarkable opportunistic increase in the invasive species and a sharp decline, followed by a gradual recovery, in native species. Chapter (3) found that changes in population and individual sizes of animal dispersers have substantial impacts on the effectiveness of their seed dispersal. High population size significantly increased the diversity and number of dispersed seeds and shortened their germination time, while the number of dispersed seeds significantly increased with body mass. Additionally, we found that forest edges overlapping with crop fields favored a higher diversity, number, and germination rate of the dispersed seeds. Simulations in Chapter (4) revealed that losing seed dispersers can affect the structure and regeneration of plant communities. Extirpation could lead to the cessation of seed dispersal and eventually the extinction of plants that rely on a single seed disperser. Also, there was a significant decrease in the number of dispersed seeds, seed dispersal distance, and germination rates when one of the dispersers was removed from the community - which can weaken forest diversity and regeneration. Overall, this work highlights how disturbances affect each level of biodiversity and create cascading effects from individual animals to entire ecosystems. Long-term monitoring and conservation strategies that support natural ecological processes are critical for maintaining forest resilience and reducing restoration costs. Hatrany am-piandohana dia isan'ny singa sy rafitra nampivoatra ny zava-mananaina ny fiovaovan'ny tontolo. Ankehitriny kosa nefa dia haingana sy mahery vaika kokoa ny fiovaovana, ka tsy afaka mivoatra malaky manaraka izany ny ankamaroan'ny zava-mananaina. Vokatry izany, maro ireo karazan-java-mananaina mitady ho lany tamingana raha tsy misy fandraisan'andraikitry ny olombelona. Misy koa ireo karazan-java-mananaina afaka miharitra ny fiovaovana ka afaka manohy miaina ao amin'ny tontolo misy azy. Na izany aza nefa dia miteraka fiovana eo amin'ny zava-mananaina miara-mitoetra amin'ny toerana iray izany, sady manova ny rafitra ary fomba fiasa sy fifandraisan'izy ireo ihany koa, no manova ny fiazonana sy fiavaozan'ny tontolo samihafa. Noho izany, ilaina ny mamaritra ny fiovana misy sy ny fiatraikany amin'ny tontolo mba hitandrovana ny harena voajanahary sy ny hanohizan'ny rohivoahary mamokatra ireo tombontsoany. Eto ary aho dia mijery ny fiovan'ny fomba fiainan'ny biby mampinono madini-batana manoloana ny fiovaovan'ny tontolo ary mamaritra ny fiantraikan'izany eo amin'ny fifandraisan'izy ireo amin'ny karazan-java-mananaina hafa. Ny tanjona dia ny (1) mijery sy mamaritra ny anjara asan'ny varika madini-batana mpivoaka alina amin'ny fiazonana sy fiavoazan'ny ala tropikaly, (2) mamaritra sy manombana ny fiantraikan'ny loza voajanahary sy fahasimban'ny ala eo amin'ny fomba fiainan'ny biby mampinono madini-batana, (3) mamaritra sy mandrefy ny fiantraikan'ny fiovan'ny isa sy haben'ny biby mpihinam-boa eo amin'ny fanaparitahana vihy ataony, ary (4) misary ny fiantraikan'ny fahaverezan'ny biby mpihinam-boa amin'ny firafitra sy fiavaozan'ny ala. Natao tao amin'ny valan-java-boaharin'i Ranomafana Ifanadiana sy ny manodidina, ao atsimo atsinanan'i Madagasikara, ity fikarohana ity, nanomboka ny taona 2021 hatramin'ny 2024. Famandrihana velona sy voafaritra ireo biby madini-batana, fanisana, fandrefesana, sy fambolena ireo vihy hita tao anatin'ny tain'izy ireo no nanangonana ny haitao samihafa hahatratrana ireo tanjona voalaza ireo. Hita ary fa mpanaparitaka vihy mahomby ny varika madini-batana mpivoaka alina satria mampitombo ny isa sy karazan-java-maniry voaparitaka izy ireo, mampalaky ny fitsimohan'ny vihy sy zana-kazo, ary manampy ny fiavaozan'ny ala, indrindra amin'ny faritra izay nianjadian'ny fiovaovana naharitra. (1) Hita tamin'izany ihany koa fa ny rivo-doza sy ny fahasimban'ny ala dia manova ny isa sy ny haben'ny biby mampinono madini-batana, izay midina faraky izay ambany aorian'ny rivo-doza, indrindra amin'ny ala efa mandalo fahasimbana. (2) Miverina miakatra nefa ireo isa sy habe ireo afaka volana maromaro, fa miankina amin'ny toetran'ny toeram-ponenana tavela sy ny sakafo misy eo an-toerana. Nasongadin'ity fikarohana ity ihany koa fa manararaotra miparitaka any anaty ala ireo karazam-boalavo mandrongatra aorian'ny rivo-doza sy rehefa miasimba ny ala. (3) Ankoatra ireo dia hita koa fa miakatra sy midina miaraka amin'ny isa sy haben'ny varika mpihinam-boa ny fahasamihafana, isa, fahafainganan'ny fitsimohan'ny vihy, ary ny halavirana hitondran'izy ireo azy ao anaty ala. Ny sisin'ala mifanindry amin'ny toeram-pambolena no faritra misy fanaparitahana vihy be indrindra hitanay, izay manasongadina ny ilana ny fampivadiana ny fambolena sy fiarovana ny ala mba hitandrovana ny harena voajanahary. Farany, (4) mampiseho ity fikarohana ity fa tsy afaka mifanolo ireo karazam-biby mpihinam-boa amin'ny fanaparitahana vihy ataon'izy ireo satria samy manana ny anjara asany. Mitotongana ihany koa ary mety hitsahatra mihitsy aza ny fiavaozan'ny tamba-java-maniry rehefa misy karazam-biby mpihinam-boa lany tamingana ao amin'ny ala iray. Nasongadin'ity asa fikarohana ity ary fa misy fiatraikany eo amin'ny ambaratonga samihafan'ny zava-mananaina ary miteraka voka-dratsy an-tana-tohatra avy amin'ny biby tsirairay katramin'ny rohivoahary iray manontolo ny fiovaovan'ny tontolo. Zava-dehibe noho izany ny fanaraha-maso maharitra sy/na miverimberina ny firafitry ny karazan-java-mananaina ao amin'ny toerana iray mba hiazonana ny rohivoahary sy hanenana ny fandaniana amin'ny famerenana ny tontolo.
