An investigation of the air flow structure over a rooftop in the turbulent atmospheric boundary layer

Abstract

The spatial dependence of the turbulent air flow over the rooftop of the Recreation, Intramural, and Athletics Building is examined with the use of high frequency sonic anemometers mounted on a mobile platform. Experimentation took place over the course of two weeks from October 17th thru October 29th, 2009 under relatively uniform meteorological conditions. The data presented suggests a region of recirculation located at the leading edge of the rooftop. This separation layer reattaches to the roof downstream at a distance of 20 meters. In addition, this investigation implies the presence of a spanwise variation in vertical wind over the rooftop that must be investigated further upon the implementation of modified experimental techniques
