Unit 53 - Urban Planning and Management Applications

Abstract

This unit examines how GIS can be used to carry out functions of urban government. Through a case study from Santa Monica, California, an example of modeling community vulnerability to hazardous materials is presented. Three GIS-based tasks—simple spatial analysis, cartographic modeling and risk assessment modeling—are illustrated through the example.
