RoboEye: Robotic Guide for the Sight-Impaired

Abstract

Background:   Through extensive research and hands-on work, our team, The Four Horsemen, was able to construct a robotic guide to aid a visually impaired individual cross a light intersection.  Known as RoboEye, it is an autonomous device equipped with an IR sensor, phone camera, and a pan and tilt system.  It can detect and differentiate between the “walk” and ”stop” symbol at the light intersection as well as avoid obstacles along the pathway.  Our team aims to reduce traffic incidents involving sight-impaired individuals and allow the transition between intersections to be easier, safer, and more efficient.
