Key's book, Southern Politics in State and Nation, delved into the political practices of the American South and problems in the  development of multiparty democracy across the region prior to the civil rights movement. It also represents an early use of maps to clearly depict spatial patterns of behavior and electoral geography that would have been invisible through traditional statistics and displays of data in tables.
