Unit 72 - GIS and Global Science

Abstract

This unit discusses the need for and challenges of creating GIS and databases that are global in scale. It describes sources of global data including remote sensing, analog maps and tabular statistics, and challenges to data integration such as storage, geometric rectification and geographic referencing, documenting, archiving, merging terrestrial and satellite data, etc. The unit concludes with some examples of databases at global scales.
