Abstracts of The 5th Annual Scientific Meeting for the Council for Nail Disorders
The 5th Annual Scientific Meeting for the Council for Nail Disorders was convened in the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C. on March 1, 2001.
The initial third of the meeting addressed nail research. Investigators supported by CND grants presented their work. Cynthia Loomis, M.D., Ph.D., discussed the roles of En1, WNt7a, and Lmx1b in nail development, a work based on transgenic and knockout mouse studies. Richard Gallo, M.D., Ph.D. discussed innate defense of nails, including work on antimicrobial peptides in porcine nail, in normal flora of porcine nail, and in skin. John Sundberg, D.V.M., Ph.D., discussed mouse models for nail disorders, comparing the histology and gross morphology of mouse nails with those of humans. Drs. Loomis and Gallo reported that CND support has led to NIH funding for their work.
The keynote session on nail tumors was moderated by Robert Baran, M.D. Dr. Baran discussed nail tumors and new tools for diagnosing and treating them properly. Bertrand Richert, M.D. reported on the innovative use of MRI in the diagnosis of nail tumors. The session was ended by Ed Krull, M.D., with a discussion of nail tumor surgery and the approach to pigmented bands.
The third and final portion of the meeting was moderated by James Del Rosso, D.O. A number of short papers were presented: Erin Warshaw, M.D., discussed quality of life in veterans with onychomycosis. Edward Jackson, Ph.D., discussed "why are some hospitals banning artificial nails?" Francis Busch discussed the treatment of delaminated and weak nails using a commercial solution of ammonium hexafluorophosphate. Bita Bigheri, M.D., discussed the yellow nail syndrome. Philip Fleckman, M.D., discussed "talon nail," a fourth type of pincher nail. Phoebe Rich, M.D., discussed nail changes in Clouston syndrome.
