On-Board Advanced Traveler Information Systems

Abstract

Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) acquire, analyze, communicate, and present information to assist travelers to have a safer, more reliable and more enjoyable travel experience. Two major types of ATIS are available: (1) Real-time network information, including traffic and transit information and (2) Traveler information such as pre-trip or on-route route guidance or destination information. This information can be provided in a variety of ways: at kiosks, on websites, using mobile phones enabled by wireless application protocol (WAP); through hand-held computers or "personal digital assistants" (PDA); or via on-board (in-vehicle) computers and displays.
