Searches for Beyond Standard Model Higgs-Related Resonances with the CMS experiment and Heterogeneous Computing for Track Reconstruction in Current and Future Colliders

Abstract

The Standard Model (SM) provides a remarkably successful description of elementary particles and their interactions. Nevertheless, several open questions indicate its incompleteness and motivate searches for new physics beyond the SM. This thesis presents a study aimed at probing physics beyond the SM through Higgs-related resonances with the CMS experiment, together with developments in heterogeneous computing for charged-particle track reconstruction. The first two Chapters of the thesis introduce the theoretical and experimental foundations of modern particle physics, including the SM, the Higgs mechanism, the Large Hadron Collider, and the CMS detector. The third Chapter presents a search for Higgs-pair resonances in the final state of two bottom quark jets and two photons, as probes of possible new physics beyond the SM. These searches exploit the unique role of the Higgs boson as a window into electroweak symmetry breaking and potential extensions of the SM.Chapter 4 addresses the computational challenges of track reconstruction in high-luminosity collider experiments. In particular, GPU-based heterogeneous computing is explored as a strategy to accelerate tracking algorithms and meet the increasing computational demands of the CMS experiments.Beyond the current LHC program, a muon collider represents a promising future collider concept, offering unique opportunities for precision measurements and new physics searches at energy scales comparable to those of a 100 TeV hadron collider. Chapter 5 explores the potential application of the advanced tracking algorithm to the muon collider environment, highlighting the associated challenges and opportunities.
