The Sustainable LA Grand Challenge was announced by UCLA Chancellor Gene Block in November 2013 as the university's first Grand Challenge initiative. Driven by the goals outlined in the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge Five-Year Work Plan, the project strives to unite the university's resources to achieve 100% renewable energy, 100% locally sourced water, and enhanced ecosystem and human health in Los Angeles County by 2050. Nearly 150 UCLA faculty from disciplines across campus are currently conducting research related to the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge. The project has awarded over two dozen research grants and funded several graduate student fellowships since 2015.
