Protected Areas Databases in California

The California Protected Areas Database (CPAD) and the California Conservation Easement Database (CCED) are authoritative GIS databases of all protected open space lands in California and are the California element of their national counterparts. These databases are publicly accessible and they are updated twice per year. GreenInfo Network, the non-profit maintaining the databases, will conduct an overview of the data, use cases, recent updates, and key resources.

Tips for getting started with the Census API

Living Landscapes: Unhoused Dwelling in Los Angeles Park Space

Analysis conducted via Jupyter and publicly accessible on GitHub takes a new approach to documenting and analyzing tension between housed and unhoused neighbors in Los Angeles, by mapping "encampment reports" in the city from 2015-2020. With a special attention to park-based encampments, many of which have been enclosed and evicted since the initial study period, this research provides a template for further mapping studies through GIS or Jupyter/Python analysis, presented as an ArcGIS storymap.

Does Sacramento exhibit an Urban Oasis Effect?

The urban oasis effect, characterized by cooler temperatures in a city compared to surrounding areas, has been documented in the western United States. To determine whether Sacramento experiences this effect, we calculated land surface temperature for the city and surrounding grassland and agricultural land using MODIS. We compared temperature among these three land cover types to determine diurnal differences and the effect of seasonality.

Understanding Mobility on MCAS Miramar

The goal of our research was to understand life on the MCAS Miramar base as it relates to mobility and transportation. One component of the research involved understanding the locations and routes that Marines use while on base. Data were collected through Garmin watches, processed through scripts and machine learning code to clean and summarize information, then finally integrated onto ArcGIS online. This allows us to analyze and visualize the frequently used buildings and roads, mode of transport, and destinations by time of day and day of week.

Interactive, Data Informed Fertilizer Applications for California Farmers

One of the most important but difficult decisions farmers make is how much fertilizer to apply and when to apply it. To address this problem in California’s small grain crops, we developed an interactive website that provides customized, site-specific nitrogen (N) fertilizer recommendations. In this presentation we describe how we integrated spatial statewide weather and soil data with user-supplied, field-specific measurements in order to provide N fertilizer recommendations.

Modeling dynamic change of marijuana use disorder in California

As marijuana use has been legalized in many states, it is important to understand the changing dynamic of the risk in marijuana use disorder (MUD). This talk explores the temporal pattern of emergency department and hospitalization discharges involving MUD at ZCTA level during 2010-2019 in California. We applied shape-based time-series clustering to identify ZCTAs with similar changing pattern over time. The prevalence of ED discharge involving MUD increased during 2010-2016 and became stable from 2017, while hospitalization discharge started decreasing since then.

Inequalities in the Distribution of Mental Health Facilities

I will present on the Geography SRP 99 research project I completed in Spring quarter on the distribution of mental health facilities in Santa Clara County (but I also plan to expand to discuss similarities and differences with LA County). I will discuss the obstacles I overcame as I used various geoprocessing tools in ArcMap and statistical tools in GeoDa to analyze the way mental health facilities are distributed in the counties, and the implications this has for planning and legislation.

GIS & community homelessness solutions: creating mobile apps for outreach and environmental monitoring

In collaboration with PATH San Diego and the River Park Foundation, HHUB San Diego (The Homelessness Hub, housed by UC San Diego's Urban Studies Department) worked to build a mobile survey and outreach tool with the Esri ArcGIS Suite for data collection and homelessness outreach in the San Diego riverbed. Current implementations built on Survey123 have been used for data collection since March 2021, future implementations in development are being built on Field Maps for further collection efforts, including a riverbed wastewater study.

Digital Documentation of Santa Cruz Cultural Heritage

The presentation includes my projects as a GIS Intern at California State Parks under the guidance of Denise Jaffke, Archaeologist at CSP, and Paul Veisze, Instructor at American River College. The first project is a historical barn, Cascade Ranch Barn, in Pescadero that was destroyed due to wildfire. As one of the historical landmarks in Santa Cruz County, Pigeon Point Lighthouse is the second project. The focus is on processing UAS imagery using Agisoft Metashape and Drone2Map.

Space and Time for the Milpa Forest Garden Cycle

As a critique of the temperate prejudice of the tropics, we embrace the hypothesis that the Maya Forest represents a domesticated landscape to examine the settlement and environmental patterns of the ancient Maya of El Pilar. Recognizing that land use is dependent on knowledge, skill, labor, and that the residential requirements of the landscape are not restricted to field crops, we consider the whole production cycle for both human subsistence and animal habitat. This includes open fields emphasizing annual crops, succession of perennial products used in homes and maintenance, and closed-canopy forests for major construction and fruits. We define the potentially cultivable landscape by excluding architecture, considering how it would cycle from field to forest and back again. Using slope as a proxy of erosion, we assess our 14sq km settlement survey around El Pilar by determining areas of cultivation with a land use cycle of 20 years. We present our results as a model of sustainable land use in the Maya Forest.

Google Places API to Create a Geospatial Dataset

City and county data portals offer useful datasets such as local farmers markets or grocery stores.  However if specialized data is not available, such as take-out food near an event location then Google Places API can be helpful in generating a dataset. Using the Google API I’ll briefly show the steps to create a customized dataset that can be read into geospatial software such as QGIS or ArcGis.

Abolition Through Art

The presentation will explore the impact of the arts as an organizing tool, how this can be an instrument to deconstruct carcerality, and ultimately, how it helps us imagine liberation expansively. Using story maps, I offer two accounts from my experiences facilitating arts workshops in juvenile halls in New York and Los Angeles and how they helped shape my perspective on the intersection of abolition and the arts.

Spatial distribution of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli isolated from patients with community-onset bacteriuria

Introduction: The prevalence of infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-E. coli) is increasing worldwide. There is growing evidence that community-onset bacteriuria caused by ESBL-E. coli may occur as outbreaks. With data from a public healthcare system in San Francisco, we found increasing prevalence of ESBL-E. coli causing community-onset bacteriuria over 6 years. We examined spatial distribution of community-onset ESBL-E. coli bacteriuria to identify such outbreaks.

Methods: We collected electronic health record data on patients with E. coli isolated from urine cultures in a public healthcare system from January 2014 to March 2020, including geocoded addresses. We identified community-onset bacteriuria as bacteriuria diagnosed < 48 hours after hospital admission or in individuals seen in primary care or emergency services with no hospitalizations in the past 90 days (N=7,751). We mapped all cases of ESBL-E. coli bacteriuria. We performed global and local Moran’s I to identify significant proximity between cases of ESBL-E. coli bacteriuria and to identify spatial clusters and places with unexpectedly high ESBL-E. coli incidence, compared to the incidence of non-ESBL-E. coli.

Results: Patients with community-onset bacteriuria were predominantly women (86%) and mean age was 46 years. The study population was multiethnic, with 42% Latina, 19% Asian, 16% White, and 13% Black patients. Preliminary results did not show spatial clusters of ESBL-E. coli compared to non-ESBL-E. coli. Conclusion: Preliminary maps show similar spatial distribution of community-onset ESBL-E. coli and non-ESBL-E. coli bacteriuria and no spatial clusters of ESBL-E. coli. We will be stratifying analyses by race and ethnicity as prior studies have found differential ESBL-E. coli burden in specific racial and ethnic groups.

Evaluating health outcome metrics and their connections to air pollution and socioeconomic vulnerability in the Coachella Valley

We use two different measures of health outcomes at the census tract level – one from randomly sampled telephone surveys and the other from emergency room visitations – to investigate the degree to which health outcomes may correlate with criteria air pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone, and socioeconomic metrics such as education level, linguistic isolation, poverty, health insurance coverage, and racial demographics in the Coachella Valley. We further investigate biases and differences between different health outcome metrics themselves.

Mapping Gentrification in Washington, DC

Anyone who visited or lived in the nation’s capital in the twentieth century would easily conclude that the city has changed in the twenty-first century. Our story maps combine Google Street View with Census data to assess these changes and describe and measure gentrification in Washington, DC.

Crowdsource Mapping of Barriers to Biking, Walking and Rolling

Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for mortality, responsible for 6% of deaths globally. In the United States, 60% of adults do not meet physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per week and 25% are not physically active at all. Physical inactivity is disproportionately high for population experiencing barriers to mobility, such as seniors, people with disabilities, people from low socio-economic status neighborhoods, LGBTQ+ people, and underserved racial and ethnic groups. A challenging to improving access to physical active forms of transportation is that barriers to bicycling, walking, and rolling are not well represented in data. For example, <20% of bicycling crashes are reported to official sources and few data sets existing on micro-barriers walking and rolling, such as missing curb cutouts, blind spots, missing crossing. Our goal is to increase and improve data on barriers to bicycling, walking, and rolling by developing and deploying crowdsource mapping tools. In this talk I will highlight BikeMap.org, a tool for mapping bicycling crashes, near misses, and hazards, which our team launched globally in 2014. I will overview our approaches to data collection and analysis and highlight what we have learned about bicycling safety, crowdsource mapping, and stakeholder engagement.  I will also introduce a new tool our team is launching, WalkRollMap.org. WalkRollMap.org is a tool for mapping micro barriers to walking and rolling. With WalkRollMap.org our primary stakeholder are people experiencing barriers to their mobility and requires a different approach to outreach. Through this presentation, I will over how how crowdsource tools can help us “un-gap the map” and discuss how our approach to outreach can enhance social disparities or be an agent for increasing equity through more complete and representative data.

Bin Identification, Waste Rectification: Multi-stream waste data collection strategies at a large public institution

The Renewable Energy Association at UCLA is a student organization, part of which aims to advance sustainable waste practices. In order to track the trends of waste data on campus, a comprehensive map of the waste bins is needed. We developed a system to uniquely identify and locate all campus waste bins, and have converted it into a digital map. We hope this data will be used to facilitate a greater understanding of UCLA's waste amongst students and researchers.
