Mapping Gentrification in Washington, DC
Anyone who visited or lived in the nation’s capital in the twentieth century would easily conclude that the city has changed in the twenty-first century. Our story maps combine Google Street View with Census data to assess these changes and describe and measure gentrification in Washington, DC.
Living Landscapes: Unhoused Dwelling in Los Angeles Park Space
Analysis conducted via Jupyter and publicly accessible on GitHub takes a new approach to documenting and analyzing tension between housed and unhoused neighbors in Los Angeles, by mapping "encampment reports" in the city from 2015-2020. With a special attention to park-based encampments, many of which have been enclosed and evicted since the initial study period, this research provides a template for further mapping studies through GIS or Jupyter/Python analysis, presented as an ArcGIS storymap.
Crowdsource Mapping of Barriers to Biking, Walking and Rolling
Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for mortality, responsible for 6% of deaths globally. In the United States, 60% of adults do not meet physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per week and 25% are not physically active at all. Physical inactivity is disproportionately high for population experiencing barriers to mobility, such as seniors, people with disabilities, people from low socio-economic status neighborhoods, LGBTQ+ people, and underserved racial and ethnic groups. A challenging to improving access to physical active forms of transportation is that barriers to bicycling, walking, and rolling are not well represented in data. For example, <20% of bicycling crashes are reported to official sources and few data sets existing on micro-barriers walking and rolling, such as missing curb cutouts, blind spots, missing crossing. Our goal is to increase and improve data on barriers to bicycling, walking, and rolling by developing and deploying crowdsource mapping tools. In this talk I will highlight BikeMap.org, a tool for mapping bicycling crashes, near misses, and hazards, which our team launched globally in 2014. I will overview our approaches to data collection and analysis and highlight what we have learned about bicycling safety, crowdsource mapping, and stakeholder engagement. I will also introduce a new tool our team is launching, WalkRollMap.org. WalkRollMap.org is a tool for mapping micro barriers to walking and rolling. With WalkRollMap.org our primary stakeholder are people experiencing barriers to their mobility and requires a different approach to outreach. Through this presentation, I will over how how crowdsource tools can help us “un-gap the map” and discuss how our approach to outreach can enhance social disparities or be an agent for increasing equity through more complete and representative data.
Bin Identification, Waste Rectification: Multi-stream waste data collection strategies at a large public institution
The Renewable Energy Association at UCLA is a student organization, part of which aims to advance sustainable waste practices. In order to track the trends of waste data on campus, a comprehensive map of the waste bins is needed. We developed a system to uniquely identify and locate all campus waste bins, and have converted it into a digital map. We hope this data will be used to facilitate a greater understanding of UCLA's waste amongst students and researchers.
