About Department of Theatre, Film and Digital Productions
The Department of Theatre, Film, and Digital Production (TFDP) at the University of California, Riverside is an interdisciplinary, practice-based academic program that combines a holistic liberal arts education with professional training in theatre, film, and digital production. Taught by nationally and internationally acclaimed practitioner-scholars, TFDP brings together creative practice, scholarship, history, theory, and community engagement to explore storytelling as a fundamental way that people experience and construct the meanings of their lives. Our faculty are active professionals and scholars whose work spans directing, writing, acting, dramaturgy, design, filmmaking, documentary, editing, performance, and research. Their work has received national and international recognition, including award-winning films and documentaries, productions presented at venues around the world, and top honors at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Faculty members have worked across theatre, film, and television, contributed to Emmy-nominated and award-winning productions, served as leaders of professional organizations, and published influential books and scholarship in their fields. Much of this work exemplifies what TFDP defines as practice-based research: the integration of creative and scholarly inquiry through making, performing, producing, designing, researching, and engaging with communities. Through scholarship, creative practice, and public-facing work, TFDP contributes to the ongoing expression, examination, and transformation of the human experience.
