Investigating Metacognition across Domains

Abstract
Metacognition, or thinking of one’s own cognitive processes, has been studied in a variety of domains from visual perception to education. Metacognition is typically studied within a domain (such as memory or perception) rather than between domains. This dissertation begins with two domain-specific investigations of metacognition. The first investigates metacognitive behaviors during a numerosity perception task. The second studies metacognitive sensitivity in online classroom-based assessments for a college-level course and proposes a new method for accurately measuring metacognitive sensitivity in real-world datasets. The dissertation ends with a project specifically studying the domain-generality of metacognition across three domains. These projects synthesize metacognition literatures in visual perception, memory, learning, and science reasoning, both in vocabulary and statistical approaches. This body of work facilitates a broad future research program in the cross-disciplinary study of metacognition.
