Sukayk and al- Summāqah: Mamluk Rural Geography in the NorthernJawlān/Golan Heights in light of Qāytbāy’s Endowment Deeds

Abstract

This chapter presents and discusses three unpublished 15th century CE endowment deeds (waqfiyāt, sing.waqfiyah), by Sultan al- Ashraf Qāytbāy (r. 1468–1496 CE) concerning the villages of Sukayk and al- Summāqah in al- Jawlān (the Golan Heights). The chapter provides an annotated and rectified transcription of the waqfiyahs, with an English translation followed by a discussion of their contents.
