Cracking the Code: Laguerre-Gaussian Modes and the Battle Against Microbunching Instability

Abstract

A collective phenomenon that is observed with FELs due to the high density of electrons is intensity instability. The particles create sizable fields that work back onto the beam itself which can change the longitudinal phase distribution. This phenomenon is known as microbunching instability (MBI). Techniques have been developed to mitigate this phenomenon with decent efficiency. We look to validate the technique used in the research article [1] by comparing it to the standard model [6] while giving some background on the factors that add to the instability.
