Hysteresis and relaxation in bistable diffusive sandpile

The effect of ambient diffusion, representative of neoclassical transport, on hysteresis and edge-relaxation phenomena was studied. This effect prolongs the time needed to reach the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability boundary, and thus provides a positive feedback on the pedestal. The results indicate that the effect of the diffusion on the pedestal structure and dynamic is substantial.
