Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness which occurs in a particular interpersonal context. This article traces the history of hypnosis from its origins in Mesmerism; discusses individual differences in hypnotizability, their measurement, and correlates and summarizes experimental studies of selected hypnotic phenomena, clinical applications of hypnotic suggestion, and current theories of hypnosis.
